Yeah, mine too.  Maybe not the utimate DPS of a barbarian, but you still contibute significant DPS and with a holyburst ring and Tharnes goggles things start to get interesting, indeed.  Dem just has Axer envy...  Wink Wink Wink Wink

I just added this to the invent a named item thread:

GreatAxe of the Unamed Barbarian

Summon 3 Sorcs and two Clerics to adventure with you for 10 mins, then rambles inanely over voice chat about what a great barb you are. 5% chance on hit to post a forum message about how great a barbarian you are, and how much DPS you can do. 1% chance on hit that a random person has added you to their /squelch list.

Since you have Minos helm and you plan to get Tharnes Goggles which is a must have for any character using a weapon (ranged or melee) you might want to consider a hp cloak with a guard. Some guards are very good, and I personally like Radiance Guard. You can get it on a GS item, or on a DT armor and the proc rate of Radiance guard is very good.

Now, giving that kind of advice if I could convince myself to log and play with you guys.  Grin

As a finesse monk he's not going to do much damage.  If he's ALSO getting hit enough for a guard to go off then he's not just a standard monk-style gimp, he's a gimp of epic proportions.  Guards work best on DPS classes (classes that sacrifice armor in order to deal significant damage), not utility-based ankle biters.

That's all the game effectively allows for.  My pen and paper characters are nothing like my DDO characters, but I always play to succeed.

I ran epic Von 6 last night and had someone say much the same thing, as I tanked the Djinn on first base, and then killed it. It was just me an a cleric on first base too. Bit his ankles too much I suppose?

BTW - Aranticus thank you for all the in game advice you gave me for my monk. Everything works great and I can solo in the devils battlefield now. That was giving me problems before.

Got the Tharnes Goggles this weekend. I and another guy rolled 99's for them. I won the roll off with a 90.

I'm honestly happy that you like your character, but once you get your barbarian to level 20 you'll understand how pathetic monks are in comparison.  On top of that, barbarians aren't even the best overall melee characters.

well, I think one thing has be proven true over the lifetime of DDO and that is, having "the very best build" isn't really required to contribute and suceed.  I'd take a fully gimped monk who knows how to play over an uber build barbarian who doesn't, any day.  For you, DDO is all about playing the ultimate "fill in the blank", that's totally valid, but it really doesn't have to be that way for others.  I've got my first barbarian (WF) up to level 17, he totally rocks and can situationally put out massive DPS, well beyond anything either of my monks can do, however he cannot do so in a subpar group, as a matter of fact, he requires a significant amount of babysitting to be effective.  Neither of my monks require this at all, and in comparison they may take a little longer to bring mobs down, but ultimately the mobs do go down, in all the content, with the exception of perhaps ToD, and quests or raids that have tough marilith fights.  So, pathetic is not how I would describe monks.

I agree. It was not my intent to start a "which type of character is better debate" when I asked about GS items for my monk. Some people are happy playing a character that puts out high dps, but needs others to support them. Some people are happy playing casters. Some are clerics. Everyone has their own preference. I agree that barbs are nice, but you are pretty well dependent on a group, or a lot of resources (imho). My play style is a little different from that. I like some of the freedom my monk gives me. I may try a healer, or caster next, I am not sure. In any rate GS is out for my monk, unless its a + hp cloak, but I am not in any hurry. Now, if someone could tell me who I need to sleep with to get the other two boot ingredients, I'll go on my way. I have been in 3 ToD's and yet to be part of a completion. I don't have boots, so I don't think I am being that helpful.

I need the devils keepsake and the mysterious artifact. I have a +2 tome of charisma, some plat, one or two large (I think) ingredients, and 2 black/1 white dragon scale I could trade in some combination. Oh, and I have a scroll for some epic cape from Von. Its the one for Charisma... can't remember the name.

I don't have the keepsake, but I do have a mysterious artifact laying around.  If you get the keepsake and post a link to myddo.com of a DPS character you own (other than a monk) that's level 20 I'll give you the artifact for free (provided my account can still be accessed, which is probable).

I am still new. The highest character I have, other than the monk, is this one at lvl 18. http://my.ddo.com/character/khyber/dreckler/

I won't be leveling him until I can Greater Reincarnate and fix him. He is a liability to any party, which you will see if you look at his stats. This was my first character and I used one of the paths for a bit. He has a 14 int and can actually read and stuff. Sword and board. A little gimpy.

LOL!  indeed.  One of the reasons I built Tablespoon, besides the fact that I got Carnifex in a delera's run, was to be able to "bring it" on various raids and some of the higher level content.  I still have a lot to learn...  but one thing for sure, the real definition of uber contains a large percentage of "uber gear" and a somewhat lesser portion of build.  Barbs seem like the hands down easiest build to make, fairly easy to play, but still without gear you are still just ok..

Single stat chars are easy: Max the single stat, dump the rest in Con.  For that reason I'd say the easiest to build are Sorcs, Clerics, and Wizards.  Barbs are up there because even though they are a two stat build, the second stat is Con.

After running a friends monk around the marketplace on the egg hunt, I can see where they would be highly addictive.  Can anyone point me to a DPS monk build?  I guess I should say a supposedly DPS build, because like Demoyn I'm a bit skeptical.  But I'll give it a shot.

Two levels to go on Inkblack, then I think he'll get TR'ed into a monk.

Well, I think strength based monks are kind of a waste of time, that said, I have never run one.  I would go halfling, dex wis build, but focus mostly on Dx and make sure you are gonna hit 22-24 strength by level 20.  Dump int and char, depending on what gear you have and what you plan to have modify something like this accordingly(assuming 34pt):

13 +5level +2tome+6item=26
18 +2enhancement+2tome +6item+28
14 +2+6=22
8
16 +3enh +1tome +6item=24 (exp wis item and +2 tome)=26
8

take all the guild and cunning enhancements and take GM in wind adept in water (for unbalancing strike) collect good 5% weighted handwraps and get tharnes goggles.  and go cleaver monkey

thats a start, I can point you in a few directions.  others probably have some different ideas.  I don't think Stunning fist or quivering palm is worth pumping wis for, dex gets you AC and saves.

Demoyn,
If you were serious about the mysterious artifact, it is the only ingredient I lack. I have my fighter at lvl 19 now, and it isn't going to take much to push him to 20.

I'm sending you the artifact with the assumption that as soon as you're done crafting your boots that you'll look into re-equipping your character.  It doesn't do much good to compare two characters when one of them is poorly equipped and has items that don't even stack with each other (two constitution items, for instance).

You are so right. This character is my first character. I just GR'd him and fixed his stats and feats. I was on a path for awhile and then started doing things on my own. I was playing him this weekend and wondered what I was thinking with some of this stuff. Ehh, I am learning what is better equipment as I get experienced. He should have a MinII GS Dorf Axe by this weekend. My monk is a little better equipped.

edit to add - I never compared this character to my monk (or I didn't intend to). I like my monk better, because I can do a lot of stuff that I can't do on this, or my barb. The monk cant tank much either, so they all have their place. Smiley

I think Dem will tell you that place in the garbage can, but he can only see playing the game one way.  I'm sure he'll even suggest to you it's the best way and of course it is, why should it not be.  We're all the same, have the same interests, play the same.  That's the real advantage of DDO, it's complex and once you figure out how to game the system why on earth would you want to do anything else.

I have to say I have grown tired of the one-size-fits all approach that some people take with this game.  Perhaps even more so, their willingness to try to force it on others.  For Dem if you aren't bringing Harry down in one round you're doin' it wrong.  For me not so much.  Don't slag your monk just cuz Dem is giving you a cookie.  Monks do fine DPS.  T

I would like to point out that I've never required him to reduce the role his monk has in his gaming.  I am, however, confident that if he were to invest even half the time in his fighter or barbarian that he would see the vast superiority for himself.
