Most of the chocolate coins that come to the US aren't actually made here. Liebers, Manischewitz, and Paskez import their chocolate coins from Israel. They're kinda faux chocolate, super sugary, and slightly waxy but not, as far as I am aware, due to any kosher reason. There are companies in the US that make star kosher 65% cocoa dark chocolate gelt that is supposedly quite tasty. The imported stuff is just low quality cheap shit, which is why it's...well...cheap to purchase. Cheesy


Oh, and some people put orange flavoring or candied ginger in or on their gelt. That could be it too. Did it taste kinda like those "Whack and Unwrap" Toblerone Chocolate Oranges?

I love the chocolate oranges, but no, the gelt was more like the super sugary/waxy imported chocolate you described.

Funny part is that it tastes a lot like those non-name brand easter egg candy, which raises the interestig question of "Are we importing our easter candies from Israel?"

Nah. Highly doubtful. I had a pen pal while there was still a USSR and one of the things he sent me was some soviet chocolate. Same basic taste only somehow even waxier.

I have no idea what this gelt thing is, apart from a Jewish chocolate money thing, which I've gleaned from context. But it sure as shit sounds like british chocolate coin leftovers to mee... Wink

Gelt is the chocolate coins that you give to kids to shut them up at pretty much every jewish holiday, though normally they are limited to Channukah, where the kids will play Dreidel and end up giving all their chocolate to the one lucky kid who's probably going to end up fat from the ~2 pounds of crappy chocolate s/he insists to eat in one night. .
