Sometimes when reading the DDO forums, I come across references(usually negative) to some "Offer Wall" thing Turbine did.
What was that thing exactly and how was it bad?

Think virus laden promotions that encouraged collection of your private data by fourth parties for doing surveys etc in exchange for Turbine Points.
Sounded like someone in upper management said 'this sounds great! Make it happen!' before some of the legal and technical minefields were properly explored.
And when they did tighten it down to the safe stuff the maxim 'there is no such thing as a free lunch' was proven to the point it was worthless and quietly dropped.
In fairness to Turbine facebook and many other companies were doing the same thing at the time.
Well this is my interpretation anyway

Not all of the links in that wall had viruses in them. I'm pretty sure that some of the links just sent your personal information (including at least part of your DDO login information) to Nigerian scammers who couldn't be bothered with including a virus in their offering.
Essentially, it was the same kind of crap that you can subject yourself to on Facebook games in order to get more Mafia Wars or Farm Wars or Castle Wars or whatever points (i.e. exactly the thing that gives Facebook games such a bad rep).

Imagine clicking random links on porn sites and then imagine that clicking on said links was safer than the offer wall

but also imagine that porn site had a fair amount of personal information about you and was sending that as plain text to the person at the end of the link you clicked on.

Anybody coming to this board expecting anything more sophisticated than a dick joke had better get used to disappointment.

I just got that impression after you spent 13 pages calling out eladiun for being an interwebs bully when anyone who's been posting on here already knew that. I mean, he's proud of it and hardly tries to hide that at all.

Then imagine that Turbine encouraged you to click on those links by providing you free Turbine Points when you did, but never told you about any of the "side benefits" of clicking on the links.

In other words, shit that I would not have bothered with.
Ok, thanks for the answers. Now for me to watch the Drama Llama Land forums.

Just linking to the OFFER wall SENT YOUR BILLABLE ACCOUNT NAME TO THE COMPANY.
Not your anonymous message board name, your actual physical, BILLABLE ACCOUNT NAME.
Whoever was the idiot programmer that OKd the sending of the BILLABLE account name has never been admitted publicly.
The idea was to send your marketing information to the offer wall company, began with an S, and their spam partners. In return, you received 100,000s of spam emails and 5 to 100 turbine points. The spam emails would keep coming and coming, but you ONLY received the turbine points ONCE.
