Weapons and armor can be annoying since you often want metal types on them and BtA metal type weapons and armor are rarer than hens' teeth.  All of the other slots can use BtA items just fine, though. 

Just start with a BtA bracers/ring/whatever and make that into your crafting blank.  When you craft onto it, that piece of gear remains BtA.

If you want to get a crafted piece of gear with a guild augment slot, then you'll probably be stuck with BtC.

Edit: since I made this post, I have actually pulled a couple of BtA metal type weapons and armor.  I have a pair of Mithril Full Plates, a Mithral Breastplate, a Mithral Chain Mail, an Adamantine Full Plate as well as a Silver Scythe.  Maybe someday I'll pull the mythical BtA Silver-threaded Handwraps.

I figured that I'd necro this thread instead of making a new one.

Madfloyd said that the client will soon look in your bags to find crafting ingredients instead of just looking in your backpack.

Also, he mentioned in the same thread that spell component bags are closer to reality now than they were in the past because of this functionality, but that there aren't current plans to make them happen.

dev tracker has another post from eladrin saying risia crafting will not work on cannith items.
