	They didn't really make Kingdoms of Amalur either from what I understand - they bought a studio that had most of a game finished and then retrofitted their Amalur world/branding on to it. Pretty much nothing but vapor has actually come out of that company.

	Part of the problem is that they promised R.A. Salvatore 1.5 million UP FRONT for his work and another FIVE MILLION in royalties. For a game that only sold something like 410,000 copies...if their agreement with him is legally binding and they're about to go under (They just tried to cut the state of Rhode Island a check for their 1.125 million installment or whatever INSTEAD of paying their employees for that pay period, and the state handed them their check back because it would have BOUNCED due to STILL not being enough.) they may have had to take all of their profits and shuffle it his way, lest there be lawyers. Who knows how much Todd McFarlane was getting. Of course, they might have sold more copies if they spent time patching the major leveling problem AS PROMISED instead of touting TWO new pieces of DLC. Those sorts of shenanigans are reminiscent of Brad McQuaid during the Vanguard "drug problem" days and lead to lots of bad press. I wonder how big of a bath they took on box sales? Of course, that being said, one good Steam sale could turn this all around for them...

	I heard a piece about 38 Studios on NPR last night. That's an impressive level of fuck-up, when you can headline prime time news with how much taxpayer money you've blown.

	Honestly, being from Massachusetts and living in Rhode Island I can tell you this is a tempest in a Tea Kettle.� Rhode Island literally has no industry.� Zero.� It has the second worst unemployment in the country.� Pretty much everyone who lives in RI works in Mass.� So, the previous administration (governor and cronies) paid through the nose to get Schilling to move 38 Studios to RI hoping to generate a Video Game industry boom in RI.�They wanted his face and his star power for RI.� The current governor Chaffee tried to get into the planning meetings when the deal was being made (he was an x-US Senator and running for Gov at the time) and was basically thrown off� site by the sitting Governor.� So, Chaffee has been waiting to stick it to everyone involved and it's an election year.� Under any other circumstances with any other company the governor wouldn't have had a major press release announcing a company is behind in a loan payment by 2 weeks.� RI has major political figures and business owner behind on their taxes by more than that.� Business as usual would have been to sort this out with 38 Studios without the press.� This was election year politics and a revenge slap from a slighted governor with a bad toupee.� Now, is the studio crashing...� remains to be seen but 410,000 copies on an initial game is respectable and it's reviews were good.� I played the demo...twas fun but I just can't work anymore games in atm... The world building on their MMO looks impressive as well.

	That demo video was rushed out to attempt to counter the bad press AFAIK. It's nothing more than a lame fly-through. It seems very unlikely that they ever make it as far as releasing anything.

	Au contraire. This is the best out come I could have picked. All those politicians that wanted to buy Shillings attention with tax payer money are looking like idiots. The worse possible thing that could have happen is that RI gave shilling the 8.5 million in more tax breaks that he was asking for, and they found a buyer, making this work out for RI. If those dushes wanted to bet on a company, use their own damn money.

	What, again, brings me to the theory that the "struggling" games Industry is not struggling because of the piracy (it surely hurts a bit) but because of too much offer. They are making huge amounts of money...and spending huge amounts of money.

	"Struggling" is relative. In the eyes of shareholders, the whole PC Video game industry is "struggling" compared to sports games on the ecksbawks and World of Warcraft.
