Sony online is developing it.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/06/05/wizardry-online-unleashes-a-bevy-of-e3-s...

I played the boxed games from Sir Tech and remember them being a challenge.

If it's anything like the original games, expect tons of nerdrage. Metric fucktons that makes Shade post Barb nerf look like a fucking amateur.

For those unfamiliar with the series:

Death can come very easily even if you know exactly what to do, and if you don't...
Resurrection can fail. If it fails twice, you are permanently dead. Some forms of death skip the first phase entirely by reducing your body to ashes outright.
Even if it works you permanently lose Vitality, making it more likely you die again (res success is also based on Vitality).

Even if you don't outright die there's plenty of things that knock levels off you permanently just by hitting you and if you're not abusing one of the high XP encounters levels take a very long time to get.

Take all that into account along with the typical MMO mentality by players and devs and it sounds like it'd be great fun to watch the chaos.

From what I read, it's pretty close to the original series. You die, then fail a resurrection, your character is ashes. You get a last chance attempt, which probably will fail, then your character is gone. On the plus side, your account has levels, so your next character doesn't go through the tutorial (where you are immune to being murdered by other players because they feel like it) and other newbie stuff (IE bonus chance to resurrect). Don't remember if there were other penalties with death. IE experience, or leaving your stuff at your dead body (where maybe other people can loot it). Looks like it could be interesting.

In fact... Let me check something...

Ah, found a link and an interesting quote.

http://www.dotmmo.com/wizardry-online-4516.html

"Compared with other MMORPGs like Trinity 2 and Red Blood Online, Wizardry Online is harsher to players. Instead of indulging players in easy quests, this game seems to take delight in making players get killed by providing extremely perilous dungeons and utterly formidable enemies. The dark dungeon is usually strewn with dead corpses of your allies as well as hidden traps, ranging from toxic gases to sharp spikes. It may lead to irrevocable doom if you adopt a rash move, so you should think twice before taking action. Better safe than sorry.

The most prominent feature is that death in Wizardry Online is permanent. After being killed, you will lose your body and live as a ghost. There is still a chance to lay hands on your corpse and gain a resurrection, but it is not easy. A failure means everlasting suffering in the form of an apparition."

Another link to a description of the game:

Oh man, I had so much fun with that series.  Wizardry 7 was the epitome of CRPGs as far as I'm concerned.  I doubt an MMO is going to recapture the CRPG feel, though.  The screens look like some sort of anime mashup.

Hee hee hee. At least you can go and murder people in Wizardry Online. That guy who's always bugging you about "shr plz?" Well, whatever the Wizardry version is, you do it, bring him to the dungeon, then kill him. Next, you raise him with the worst raise possible, and kill him again. Repeat until he can never be raised again!

Yep, going to fun times as a healer in that one!

I do agree that the graphics look kind of silly, but hey, compared to the original wizardry, I don't think we have much room to complain. Wink

Could care less about the graphics; if it is a solid replacement for DDO and not an utter grindfest I'll give it a try.

A game where a lag-induced death could equal losing your toon forever...including dying to a portal-camping ganker. Yeah, let me sign-up for that.

Easily avoided in mechanics by making you invulnerable till you move after zoning.  Or they may have a seamless world?  Lag, not so easily avoided cause you'd have 'plug pullers'.

Good thoughts. Now how do you avoid the healer killing you because you "took their loot" or something like that?

...

I ask knowing full well I play a healer in almost every MMO.  Wink

So do I in general, so I'm not going to put myself out of business, GFY hahahah!

Things like this will drive community cohesion, much to the developers chagrin in the long run I feel.

Crazy, I remember playing Wizardry I on an old C64. This one can go either way: it could be great or it could suck donkey balls.

Strike that, in open beta now.  But you can still use the code in case there are any 'closed beta' goodies.

A review of the launch experience from another forum:

Quote:
First Impression:

This looks like an awesome game...  For 1999.

Admittedly it is launch day, so some of this is to be expected, but...

Download game.  It's only 2GB and downloads fairly fast.

Launch game.  Resolution is 1024x768.  There are only 2 buttons, Start and Exit.

Click Start.  It hangs while saying Connect.

Try again, same thing.

Look at forums, apparently it's not hung, it just takes 5 to 10 minutes to get to server selection.

Wait until it gets to server selection.  There are 2 servers.  Click on the US server.  That's another 5 to 10 minute wait.

Create a character, which all look very anime inspired and have like 5 choices for each of 3 things to customize your character.

Finally get into the game and get to an options menu so I can change to horribly resolution.  Set resolution to 1900x1200.  Accept...  To change the resolution you must restart the client.

Not a good first impression so far...

Couldn't handle the game play.  Felt way too awkward. Graphics were pretty awful as well.  I played for an afternoon and quietly put it away; uninstalled it and deleted my registration emails lol.
