The Epic Destinies selection screen is really buggy. If you mash buttons a bit you can take abilities before you should be able to.

I somehow spent my first 4 points on Magister Int Tier 1 and 2, which shouldn't be possible. A guildy ended up with 7 points spent and -3 remaining, 4 of those 7 points were on Tier 2 abilities. Fun stuff.
