I have mixed feelings about Steam, but I have also mixed feelings about having mixed feelings.

I can''t condone a system that assume you're a pirate and requires you to be connected to play a single player game ( namely Napoleon Total War ).

And I won't go into the bloatware that is Steam, as a 'docked application down there with the rest of the bloatwares like antiviruses'.

I got my ddo update really quickly from steam, and now i'll likely uninstall it until next time. This is the first time i've ever used steam for anything.

I think it's a good move. May also increase the player base.

I can understand your first argument.  I'm the kind of person that refuses to have their bags checked on the way our of Best Buy.  But the second argument holds no water at all.  On a modern machine (meaning 3-4 years old) you can't even tell Steam is running in the background.

I suppose I'm in the minority.  I like Steam.

I have all my games stored on their servers.  When I upgrade my computer or hard drive or re-install Windows, I can get my games without trying to hunt down my install CD/DVDs.

Now, not being able to play some single player games without being on-line is not good, but I'm pretty sure that option is mandated from the individual publishers.   Don't buy those games if you don't like it.

Steam and Valve are the shit.  Easy to use.  Unobtrusive.  No more f'n CD's. Good Deals.

Sorry my machine is $DDO years old  Roll Eyes  ( Pentium D 930 )

But anyway, enough bloatwares stuffed into that bar and you will feel it, trust me.
I have a 1 year old laptop for work... and a list of bloat/crap/shit/fuckware that runs in the background ( ranging from Child Porn hunter to Full Hard Disk Encryption with fun stuff like some Citrix client, LAN/WLAN control [ when LAN OFF WLAN ON, WLAN OFF LAN ON, no you can't have both up at hte same time, So long ] ) and well, even without Steam I cringe when I have to do some heavy duty things on it. I've stopped counting the times I've just Alt-Ctrl-Del -> Process Manager -> Kill the fucking process that makes it go at a snail rate.

Just the Hard Disk Encryption kills about 30% of performances...  Cry
To give an idea : right now I have IE opened on the Vault ( 4 Tabs ), Thunderbird, a Media Player playing "Asia - Holy War", and an excel sheet ( nothing frilly in excel, just plain tabs filled with stuff and lots of colors )... the Memory used is 1.92 Gb ( I whined enough to be entrusted with 4Gb on that fucking laptop... all the others have to make do with 2Gb... which they fill by just opening Outlook.  )

My son uses steam for a lot of his games. When he isn't on, I just turn off steam and no problems.

Exactly, it's not rocket science.  Set it to not start on start-up and shut it down when you aren't using it.

That's not steam doing that, that's the game publisher.

I can play all of my steam games offline EXCEPT the ones that come with built-in "online only" DRM from the publisher.

It's good fun.

I always like the puzzled looks when someone asks "May I see your receipt?" and I just tell them no or ask why they want to see it.

You have exactly as much right to stop them and demand to see random contents of their wallets as they have to stop you and demand a receipt.  Of course, it can make for a scene... ever get caught in the middle of one?

It would be more fun to demand what is in their pants.

Bonus points if they show you.

No, but once when asked I did stick the receipt in my mouth.

My friend got accosted at a Walmart. He was leaving with a bookshelf in one hand and a jug of milk in the other. When asked to show his receipt, he asked the door guy to hold the bookshelf so he could pull the receipt out of his pocket, when the guy refused he just left and went to his car. The guy and two others followed him out to his car with the door guy saying that they would call the police if he didn't stop and show his receipt. He drove off and called the manager later.

I wouldn't have bothered to call.  I'm comfortable with my rights, at least in GA.  I have no idea what I'd do in another state.  In TX I would probably drop to the ground prone.

It's extremely fun when I go to the supermarkeet while on duty... When the supposed pittbull at the entrance tells me that he needs to 'lock' my backpack I usually tell him that I'll just remove the thing as soon as he has finished putting it because I may need the content of the backpack at any fucking time if I'm called.
Usually they go all grumpy, but as they have no real power they can't do anything about it.

I can walk in the supermarket with a backpack on and noones says a thing.  When I was younger this was a great way to get MP3s and CD players to sell to all the stupid rich kids that I went to school with.

Here they tend to freak out when you're carrying a bag bigger than a handbag that's obviously not empty.

I thought it was firmly established that it was wrong to be French.  It even says so in someone's title somewhere.
