They don't mean to screw everything up.  They just don't know how to do complex things like version control (VCS) or public relations (people are hard!) or even communication amongst themselves (email is confusing!)

Cut 'em some slack.  I get the impression Turbine started in someone's basement by people who had investors but no clue how to run a software business and lucked into a few top lore names.  They are doing the best they can with a complete lack of leadership or knowledge of how to deploy software successfully.

They know this, that's why they are starting to "update" so that they look like "other games" even if their changes make no sense in their own game.

It's not easy being accidentally successful...
