Nintendo 3ds opinions

My son is getting a Nintendo 3ds for his 7th birthday from both sets of grandparents.  There is a new, larger Nintendo 3ds available that has gotten some good reviews.

Any opinions on whether the smaller or larger 3ds would be better or opinions on the 3ds in general?

We have already talked to him about some of the rules that go with the game.  No DS at any meal time.  The DS does not go to school.  You cannot use the DS to avoid visiting relatives.  If you whine about having to put the DS away when it's time to stop, you don't get to play the DS at all for the rest of the day or on the next day.  etc.

Whichever one is less likely to ruin his eyes is the obvious choice.

Kids seem to like them.
has a "3D" slider kinda like a volume control.
Turned all the way made me dizzy feeling sick.

I got one for a graduation gift since I like the Nintendo handhelds. (I really didn't get into them till very late with my first being the old GBA. This is despite the fact that my first console was the brand new Atari 2600.) My previous system was the original DS so this was a nice step up. I like that you can download games, use it as an MP3 player, and take pictures/video with it. As a parent you may want to use the parental controls to lock out what you feel like blocking for him. I mean I can use the browser to read stories on Literotica.

As for size, I would go with what fits his hands the best. I"m a big guy and the smaller 3DS does not bug me too much, but I wonder if the larger one would be more comfy. I'm in no hurry to replace mine though.

Hubby says the XL is probably going to be easier on his eyes than the original one is.  I cannot play the smaller one on 3D, it gives me headaches and makes me nauseous.  I fooled around with the XL once and wasn't bothered by it after a half an hour.   YMMV

Zigana was in compliance with all rules.

Gawna did a good job at enforcing the rules as she understood them.

Stainer is the rules lawyer.

Hands down, Zigana is the Vault's best poster.

I like the DSi personally. Great middle ground.

That being said, most new games will be for 3DS only, which sucks, but at least you can turn down/off the 3D.

I played a 3ds exactly once. My brother in law has one, showed me some shooter game that puts the monsters over real time video of the living room we were in. To aim you just move the 3ds. I thought it was awesome until I was surrounded and had to literally turn around to keep fighting. Then I thought it dumb.

The 3d part is kind of neat though.

Playing Ocarina of Time on it right now. Whenever you go into first person mode (looking around, bow, hookshot, etc), you can physically move the 3ds to move the camera. I guess it uses the dual cameras on the front of it or whatever, but it is REALLY responsive

It's a good portable system, the 3d is still just gimmicky and serves no real purpose.

1/2 the time I end up just turning the 3d off.
