I've never played EVE and I don't fucking understand any of the acronyms in that article or what the fuck is going on.  Did he really spend $6,000 and lose it or was it in-game shit that's vauled at $6,000?

It was in-game shit that they valued at 6 grand. 

Think of it like someone putting 1000 Yellow Dopants in an ingredient bag and losing the bag transferring it between toons.  A yellow dopant can be bought from the store for x tps, a tp is valued at x cents, so then it's all math from there.
