New Bard trees heralding a bigger DC casting nerf?
Apr 26th, 2013 at 8:03am
Print Post
"Reviving Verse (requires Flicker, 3 ranks) - +1/+2+3 saving throw vs Sleep, Paralysis, Exhaustion, and Energy Drain"

"Raucous Refrain (require Reviving Verse, 3 ranks) - When you Inspire Courage, allies gain +1/+2/+3 Morale bonus to save vs Sleep, Paralysis, Exhaustion, and Energy Drain "

Something tells me this is not a mistake.  "We've decided that there is but one flavour of DC caster permitted in the game, which is Pale Master, built exactly to the specifications laid down in our new no-choice-at-all-really enhancement trees.  So we can't have anyone who isn't a hyper-specialised PM landing any DC spells, can we?  That would be wrong."

Odds-on the change to the spell will be sold as a buff to players:

"Update 18 Release Notes: You'll now get a SAVE against Energy Drain!  Yay!"

It makes sense to me.... why would turbine want first lifers to ED mobs and solo stuff they shouldn't be able to land in the first place. While multi past lives wizzys and completionist should merit the right to do so.

Hopefully it refers to the level drain and constitution drain effect of wights and vampires, which do have saves.

Way to miss the point.   Roll Eyes

If Energy Drain gets a save, only multi-past-life-et-cetera Pale Masters (or PM's with secondary Necro AM in the new enhancement system) will be able to land it in order to debuff saves, leaving only one viable route to DC casting.  CC is tough enough as it stands, with some great multi-life wizzy players being unable to land spells even with Energy Drain and hence migrating to Shiradi AM's in droves.

Energy Drain is a Necro spell any arcane/cleric/FvS can use to debuff because it doesn't have a save.  If you need to specialise to the hilt in Necromancy in order to get the necro debuff to land, you're left with the option of full-retard necro casting, or casting only spells with no save.

This isn't about first-life casters soloing EE's - they're doing that right now with Shiradi - it's about the nerf bat turning DDO into a game where you essentially have only Predetermined Option A or Predetermined Option B to build a viable caster, despite a raft of UI elements making it look like you have choices.

It would be nice to think it was just confusing wording, wouldn't it?  Fingers crossed and all that...

If you can land energy drain as a fort save, you might as well wail the mob.

If you can't, what's the point?

This makes it doubly hard for clerics to land it then. Energy drain does have a spell pen check. Clerics are going to lose their spell pen enhancement line, and now if a save is added you can pretty much kiss any usefulness of the spell goodbye.

Wonder if green steel ash/enervation guard is going to be nerfed as well. When the enervation guard procs its supposed to be a no save proc.

Since when does the description match the practice?

I doubt they'd bother to change Energy Drain's description to indicate that it has a save, so that applies either way.

Wait for update 18, hope you are ready to tr 1/2 a dozen times to land some dc spells.

Oh and shiradi aren't going to be soloing sht in future EE content.  (no more free lunch kiddies)

Future EE Dc casting is going to require past lifes in fvs and wizzy as a minimal standard.  Getting to 70+ int on a PM wizzy with 60+ necro dc and 55 spell pen you will land even lvl 1 spells.   shhhhhhhh   Lips Sealed  Even on my completionist caster i can land (Disrupt undead lvl 1 spell works on EE truthful one)

I guess it technically wouldn't be a nerf but giving Energy Drain a save would, yet again, make WF toons less desirable to play.

What are the odds that if they do give it a save WF will lose their immunity to it, much like poison and disease? I wouldn't be surprised.

I stopped playing my PM on June 26th, 2012.....

I'd like to thank the academy...
My Mom... (a lot of you also owe her thank you cards apparently)
God...
and of course the whiney nancy baby bitch boys who feel immasculated because the mean bad ole palemaster fingered or wailed their kill.

Just watch...

Just fucking watch them change Deathblock to "this item provides a +4, +6, etc bonus to Fortitude saves versus Death Effects"

This energy drain change horse shit may seem like a boon to a lot of fleshy players that do not play casters.

But, I feel for those of you who still make an effort to obtain meaningful spell DCs even if it means draining half your mana to debuff the mobs first.

I am SOOOOOO glad I stopped playing my Palemaster...

this would also make weapons like grave wrappings, the sacrificial dagger, and Nightmare from CITW useless, as turbine has a tendency to give items terribad DCs for spells that they can proc.........

I think at least the Grave Wrappings and Sacrificial Dagger are safe, although I'm not familiar with Nightmare; the former two, at least, proc "Life Stealing", which drains 1-3 levels on a hit.  It's definitely not the same as the Energy Drain spell...

On the other hand - while in the realm of pure speculation - it could just be that every neg-level-inflicting effect gets a save, in which case yeah, they become nigh-useless.

ah right, forgot it wasn't specifically energy drain for all of them, so yes they may be safe......but this is turbine.

On the bright side, I don't think I'd feel terrible at all for finally dropping the Assassin ToD set from my Rogue. That chance for a "Level Drain Effect" was the biggest reason for sticking with the set.

ftfy Smiley

I find it amusing that they put "exceptional sneak attack" on the ring set but...it doesn't stack!

Also 20% threat reduction is next to useless....threat reduc grows on trees.

Don't worry about the assassin set.  You have to have the Assassin III prestige enhancement that will no longer exist after the enhancement pass.  So you won't need your TOD set regardless.
