Different people, different expertise. Some people are moving on, and wanted to fix their pet peeve on the way out.

So the last thing the "experts" are going to do before the door hits them on the ass is make changes (presumably in their area of expertise, that supposedly no one else can work on) that no one is asking for, to systems that aren't feather_of_sun'ed.

This plan is gold.  It's inconceivable that anything could go wrong.

Just because you don't give a shit doesn't mean it's not worthwhile.  Surely you learned that in your "How Not to show your Narcissism" training.

I probably give more shit than I should, because I want this game to be good again. I want to see a ton of lfms at every level, like I used to. I want them to stop doing the bare fucking minimum or fixing/tweaking something completely opposite of what people are getting angry over, and quitting over. Right now it's nothing more than "shhhh, don't talk about broken stuff, look at this shiny, trivial object right here!"

But then again, maybe I'm the fool for trying to explain it to someone who missed his " How Not To Miss The Point By A Mile" training.

I read every message posted in the thread you started wherein you asked players to enumerate their pet peeves.

Secret Doors being "Boring" at ANY level was not one of them.

Having people who are "moving on" creating new systems to address a personal pet peeve RIGHT BEFORE THEY LEAVE.

Sounds great.  What could possibly go wrong?

I'm sure that all the people staying have FULL buy-in and a strong sense of ownership and responsibility for all these last-minute changes and are committed to seeing them evolve with the game environment, because that's exactly what we've seen from Cannith Crafting, Alchemical Crafting, Stone of Change crafting, "old epic" gear requiring Seal/Shard/Scroll, ToD rings mapping to non-existent prestiges, and dozens more things that are started and never finished.

If it were an option, I would have asked the people who are staying to make a list of THEIR pet peeves about the systems that the short-timers are experts on, and have the short timers document the shit out of why things are the way they are if not fix things that are actually perceived by the player base to be feather_of_sun'ed.

All making secret doors non-trivial to find is ensure that the ones that aren't required for quest completion will now be ignored by the majority of the playerbase.  Congrats you're turning something that works into something that will be doa because everyone will now ignore it completely.

How they want Sharda-kai, their new pet project to play.

Just like the changes to poison were because they wanted their last pet project to play a certain way... Just would have been nice if stuff like Web Line Trip didn't ignore Acrobat's knockdown immunity, and Drow Priestesses would break out of CC to sacrifice something half way across the map on another server...

It's not a players' pet peeve, but it's obviously a pet peeve of that developer.  I'd prefer to not have this change made because I'm generally against any changes that are made to the game at this point that don't directly improve a problem that is actively ruining someone's game play, but I at least don't blame that dev for wanting something to work a certain way.  I just disagree with the entire notion of making system changes to DDO at this point in its life that aren't essentially bug fixes.

Secret doors aren't very secret when you know exactly where they are by your 3rd run through, and you just stand infront of a brick wall waiting for a good roll on a gear check.

This is an important point. First time through a quest, its fun. After one knows where all the traps/doors are, it sort of becomes redundant.

Why would you stand there waiting for a good gear check roll? Unless you're talking elite runs at mid levels with first life ungeared toons, I cannot imagine how any rogue or arty wouldn't get a secret door on the first try. You'd have to really suck.

Right, so for toons that invest in search this will make no difference other than possibly making them take longer to find the doors (if spells don't work).  Toons that don't invest in search will either find the door with an item or spell like they already do now, or just skip the door and whatever is behind it.  In other words I'm still having difficulty understanding how this change is supposed to add to anyone's enjoyment of the game in any significant way.

If the point is to make rogues more viable (assuming that's even needed), well, I think even a syphilitic monkey could come up with at least a dozen better ideas than that, no?

I believe that Maj truly believes what he wrote, but as tin-foil-hat as it sounds, store sales still seem to me to be the likeliest driving force behind this.  Hopefully I will be proven wrong as this grand new plan unfolds and all of it's beautiful mysteries are revealed...

The only benefit secret doors have is that extra xp% they give for finding them. There are maybe 2 doors top in this game that are worth checking behind for a named item or some such.

I dunno... but I get the impression that several things going on right now are part of a bigger plan to align the MMO more closely to "a" PnP rule set.  Some sort of collaboration between Wizards (who completely and utterly screwed 4th Edition beyond even the most cynical players' expectations) and Turbine, perhaps related to DnD Next somehow?

Eh, just a random thought.  The days when I kept up with changes to the PnP rules and talked to the authors are long gone; 4E took care of that.  Mind you, at least they eventually flat-out admitted a bunch of their mistakes.

Best suggestion I seen was the one about
search quick = D20+skill,
slow search (current) = 20+skill.

now add that in and that is a good change.

In fact doing it as a "skill" stance might be a great way to do it.

I rather like that.  Like "taking 20" in PnP.  It'd be particularly useful when faced with one of the few really difficult locks around on those days when you just can't roll higher than a 3 without burning a whole stack of tools Wink

While it is good that there are people you feel so positively about, people who are leaving are leaving.

It wouldn't matter if it were Kernighan and Ritchie tag teaming the project.

They're planning and developing a new system that must be supported by the people who are staying, or their talent and efforts will be squandered.  A system that, by definition, is more important to the person leaving than to anyone else.  Who will love this baby when it's parent is taken upstate to the farm "so they have room to run"??

It's just not plausible that it'll be treated any differently than the many existing orphaned systems.

What is plausible is that it might get mostly done, but won't get finished.

NOTpopejubal wrote on Jun 28th, 2013 at 11:15pm:

The thing is that players don't care about developer pet peeves unless they overlap an issue that the players find irritating.

I'm sympathetic with the desire of a leaving developer wanting to "close out" something that's been bugging them before they bail.

This "secret door system" could be something they could point to and be proud of, and that would be great if it was something that the players wanted.

It's a solution for a problem that nobody else saw or saw as important.

If the players are lucky, it won't be worse than Guild Augments.  A system that worked nicely on deployment and that, even though it has fallen out of favor with the people who made the new system, doesn't break anything.

This will be another monument that goes neglected, and in a year, the person leaving now won't be pointing to a shining example of one person's effort resulting in lasting change, but rather a crumbling, rusting hulk.

Because that's the demonstrated core competency at Turbine.  "Allow a talented person to make something nice, then step on it".

You can't stop them from working on their secret door project now, but it would have been more impressive and evidence of real culture change to see their efforts redirected toward un-assing some of the things that other clowns have feather_of_sun'ed.

"Blah Blah Blah - not their department".  whatever.  Un-breaking things needs to be someone's department, even if it means someone is issued a box of wooden rulers, a Go-Pro camera, and the list of unresolved bugs sorted by the developer who introduced the lousy code to the live environment.  Pictures of repentant developers with bloody knuckles would have been a lasting monument for which the players would have been grateful.
