I know my wife is crazy protective of her mains names.  She went so far as to reserve both on all servers with placeholder toons.

As soon as I know someone gets butthurt over names, the fun begins...  Hell, my two main toons are both involuntarily renamed already anyway...

Seriously : I just checked through YourDDO : nobody seems to have stolen Flav on all the servers I don't play...

So my conclusion : Be a little bit imaginative in your character name and you won't have a problem.
And if you've got the mind of a ferret on MDMA like me when it comes to imagining names you ends up with a character that has several names :

Tenalafel ( official 'common' name ) in is truth Telidande Lanarethel.
( and I could go on for more than half of my characters : MEPHAS : Magically Enhanced Partially Humanoid  Sentient, Yes that's a Tincan/warforged for you )

Just to give an idea : out of 19 characters that got imported from Europe, I had to rename only three of them, while others had to rename their whole stable.
