Low Level Hirelings

I recently TR'd and having found that the huge amount of gear I had farmed over the years was now basically useless I figured I would grab a Hireling and see if it made the content easier.

Well, I got the level 1 Fighter from Korthos and he absolutely cut through mobs. Regular hits doing 20 to 30 damage and crits doing 70 to 80. I really didnt need to do anything. Even on Elite he didnt seem to take much damage either.

I know they have fiddled with Hirelings a fair bit over the years, and often lead to more complaints rather than less, but this seems like a lot more damage than I think I would be able to do with a new level 1 toon.

Interesting. I still detest hirelings though. At most they are free SP buffers or insurance in case I mess up. Nothing more.

My boy Pious the DDoor man, is an entirely different story of course.

Yeah, I play in a static group normally and we try and get a good mix of classes, so I very rarely bother with them. Sometimes the Panther or Owlbear for farming Slayers when bored.

In this case I decided to give one a try, and went with the Fighter over the Barbarian. I should grab the Barb next time and see how it compares.

One thing for everyone who is a "skeptic" on this issue: Insurance companies are basing their underwriting on the assumption that it is real. They are refusing to write policies on homes that are likely to be in danger from rising seas 20 years from now, even though the resale rate of the homes is so high that they could keep writing policies for another 10 years and still not have to pay out on 1 policy in 5, but that would be irresponsible. Unethical, as well, but that's never stopped anyone before.

It is fairly natural to assume that the fair price for the pot is the fair value of the resources I needed to make the pot plus the fair value of my labor.

There are several Wiz/Sorc hirelings with Wall of Fire on their bar, which helps greatly on melee lives in Shadow Crypt or Inferno with those damned torches.

Hirelings have their uses, although I can't think of a time when I have ever used a melee hireling.  Their attack rate is god awful slow.

Started a WF wiz on a new server to give a bit of a challenge; no gear, no money, no past lives, etc.

Picked up the Level 1 barb because he was WF and I could spot repair if needed.

That guy was basically soloing the level 1s on elite for me.  Hitting crazy hard.  Based on the weapon glow, looks like he has a chaotic enchant going on the greatsword (falchion?) he's swinging around.

I never really bother with melee hirelings. If you have the empty spot the healers are better than pots though.

Pious the great... pretty good hire.

I'm yet to TR a melee, but I usually buy divine hires.

Hirelings enchants seem to change each summon. I've used a cleric hire during a tr life recently and it seems each summon they had a different enchant on their weapon.

Ghostbane makes it easier for hirelings to deal with undead, which will increase hireling retention in-game.

The level 1 Fighter hireling can 1 or 2 shot mobs on Elite so it does the job.

Means I dont have to bother tracking down replacement gear now that all my old gear has been FoS'd.

Frenzy the barb (lvl 3-ish?) breaks every box in quests that he sees from what I can tell...

Agreed on arcane hires. I  pack a few copies of flare and such since quests like bloody crypt with  high mob density are a p.i.t.a on no/low aoe damage lives lives like fvs at that level
