For anyone interested, the 1.2 update went live last night, with over 1000 new items, some new bosses, new ores, and the like.

Hmm... wonder if the new ores get spawned in old worlds when first time loading them after patch 1.2. But with all the other changes to world creation I need to create a new world anyways it seems.

This is never the case with Terraria. Changes are not retroactive to existing worlds.

It depends on how they're implemented.

If their spawning is worldgen only, then yes, the above is a given.

If it's triggered by an event of some sort (IFF said event isn't itself dependent on a new worldgen feature), then it might be possible.
I say this not knowing anything about the particulars of the latest release -- I'd love to dig into it, but I just haven't had the time.

Of the thousands of changes, very few were retroactive.  New worlds are the best bet.
