Theory I heard regarding Sarlona and the Devs

So, the scuttlebutt is that most Devs play on Sarlona.

The scuttlebutt also says this method was created by a Dev as their own private duping method that, apparently, "escaped from the bottle."

Funny how this dupe seems to have started on that server.

If this is true, well...

Most of the devs playing on Sarlona would definitely explain our reputation as the short bus server.

I haven't passed judgment on the theory. I'm just relating it because it sounded "interesting."

Was waiting to hear (or see really) what others thought of it.

Just out of curiosity cdr, why is it "dumb"?

The fact that they are smart enough to plan this.

Also, the fact that this would have to have been a new injection with code.  Changing 'bag code' would have to come with a reason, and a person attached to it.  Without it, it could be refused from making the update.  Even if it was 'snuck in', it would still show as changed code, and had to have been reviewed.

Unless lots of pencil whipping happens and no one actually reads it.

Hmmm...you just may have a point there.

Speaking of the Devs, anyone have any suspicions as to the identity of the person who posted the dupe procedure on the Vault yesterday?

My Theory is that someone at turbine fixed this bug:

Not saying it isn't possible.  There would have to be a TON of collusion going on to get this in.  That or it was specifically let in top down, instead of bottom up.  This is a sanity check gone wrong.

Check that IP address, see if it ties to the right state.

That would be up to Ink or Strak to check the IP. They're the only two Mods now.

If they fixed that bug, it should have been tested. If they had tested the fix, they would have found the duplication.

There's no way to miss it.

Sure there is, Don't open a bag when testing.
Someone fixed the bug, saw a stack move, and saw the expected numbers in both stacks.
Fixed, added to code.

We're trying hard to live up to expectations here.  We apologize for getting something right, we'll try harder in the future.

Someone, somewhere had to view this snippet of code other than the Joe that wrote it.  Had too, I'm incapable of believing they don't have a '2nd pair' policy.

I'm trying to convince myself here that WB has at least some policies worth some salt.  I mean seriously, they own Bugs Bunny.

Obviously MajMal would disagree, but when you consider how many bugs...

1) Have been around forever
2) Are claimed to have been "fixed" (in some cases several times), but aren't
3) Are fixed only to show up again later

...I have no faith at all that uses anything remotely approaching best, or even standard, software development practices.

Honestly some of the stuff that shows up is just plain F'ing embarrasing.

I just find it so hard to believe that they are so bad at code development and control.  I'm more inclined to believe it is the fact that live, lama, ML, and Alpha are all different code bases.  Meaning, this bug didn't work on Alpha.

What they are bad at is having enough time and/or resources to QA such a massive project.

When they are adding new content, their main focus is on testing that new content and features for that release.

A full regression of stuff they "didn't touch" just isn't possible... contrary to popular believe automated testing is not something that is used at most companies to test "100% of the code"... automated testing takes just as much time to "code" as essentially to write the product... and based on what I know about most QA departments, they do not have the programmers that would be necessary to do this at Turbine.

So, you test the big obvious things, you try to do some regression on things that you think will be affected, but invariably, something that you never would have thought would have been affected is affected.

And the programmers don't have time to program "against BEST practices"... they have to get a product out the door to meet a target date set months ago that was unrealistic then.

Very few game companies get the luxury to  do thing "right", like Valve.   WoW can afford to have hundreds of developers... Turbine can't.

Not defending them... just explaining that it is not as black and white as some of you think it is.

You can't just test "everything"* and code everything to a "best practice" unless you have tons and tons of resources... and we know Turbine doesn't have that dedicated to DDO.
