I am kind of a turn based games nerd, so I liked Space Empires V a lot (the balanced mod from Captain donowhat).
Playing turns with your friends per email is quite amusing.

I'm still waiting for someone to do a remake of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeworld. If you can get it to run on Win 7 or whatever it's fucking awesome... Space games I am playing atm:
1) Starbound (early access game still in development, but still having loads of fun in it. Think space version of Minecraft).
2) Sins of a Solar Empire (4X Space game)
3) Endless Space (+ Disharmony expansion) (4X Space Game)
4) Galactic Civilizations 1 and 2 (Another 4x space game)
5) Sword of the Stars Complete Collection and SotS 2 (more 4x space games )

4x is the general "explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate".
All but Sins, if I recall correctly, are Turn based. Sins is RTS.

I've heard X3 (depending on version) is a lot of fun (newest or such, is apparently absolute shit). But, don't have X3 yet and don't have time for it

Have you tried under dosbox lately?  it's getting to be useful as hell.

EvE is, in my opinion, one of the best MMOs ever created. I played it for years and enjoyed the hell out of it until some magic boobies distracted me for the better part of a year. The only downside that EvE has is that it's learning curve is more like a learning cliff. You either learn it or you die in a glorious ball of flames.

In my opinion the original is one of the best games I've ever played. The replay value is outstanding as every scenario plays out slightly differently depending on what races show up where, which planets are where, and which race you picked. Not to mention you could play a different strategy yourself. It lacks some of the complexity of later games, both from the space genre and turn-based strats in general, but it makes up for it with a fairly well-balanced rules system that creates a lot of different outcomes.

I'd compare it to the Small World board game - easy to learn but a lot of depth to study in how those simple rules play out. Gog.com is a great place to get it now - it removes all DRM from the game so you don't have to deal with CD's/Manuals and comes at a reasonable price.
