So, he couldn't get his way, comes in on a weekend to put his changes in knowing this wasn't agreed to nor allowed and now he's leaving for a better position.  Yeah, sure.

Who knows wtf actually happened at Turbine Central.

Facts are.....

The Superior Stability and Attack Bonus ML increase on Cannith Crafted gear sucked ass and broke leveling gear setups on several toons but meh.  I blamed FoS for this Smiley

Now with so many other pieces of gear with ML 11, +6 Resist/Prot/Deadly/Accuracy and Augments and Cannith Crafting its easier than ever to Slot every relevant stat and then some on whatever toon/build so if FoS did this too then I can't complain.  Good luck with your w/e.

Cheers

This makes me sad.  It implies that the real reason why so many things are fucked up is still working at Turbine.

I'm just glad that we finally know that FoS really *is* good at his job and that his awesomeness was just thwarted by other evil people who refused to allow his greatness to shine.

Pretty much. He knew what he was getting in to. Though it was interesting to read that he quit over the direction the game is heading.

Not sure if FoS leaving because of this is a good or bad thing - or not important at all.

Final question: how does the West Coast feel about scarves?

Never crossed your mind that possibly they said, "FOS you are shit at your job. The entire ddo community thinks your loot work is shit. Start looking for a job elsewhere."

Bye, FoS.

Regardless of how fun it may be to have a scapegoat, only a portion of the things broken during his term as a dev are his fault. He wasn't solely responsible for every bug, every broken thing, and the insane power creep. There are plenty of other misfits and screwups still working there, no doubt, continuing to break things on a daily basis, along with a few people doing good things. Most people are probably a bit of a mix - doing good and bad.

The augment system is surprisingly good, although I would expect that it was a bit of a team effort. Hirelings did improve, and there were a few other small quality of life things that I can't recall off hand.

However, regardless of augments, stuff like this makes me want to say LIAFF. Attempts to wreck the Torc and Planar Gird. Random. Percentage-based procs everywhere. Stupid names (flaming II) and loot names that make it impossible to quickly search for what you want in the AH. Destruction of old named loot like the Cloak of Ice. Making everything named into BtC loot. Pony names on loot. Continuing the DDO dev hubris of "not invented by me, therefore deprecate it". Most of those things were his handiwork.

Based on the limited info available to me, I cannot say that the game saw net improvements from his efforts, or that I'll miss him.

Memnir wrote on Jun 14th, 2013 at 10:59am:
Note to any Turbine staffers reading this, and one I genuinely hope you share around the office: DDO has become a shit game because y'all have made it a shit game. Once it was great. Now, it's a festering puddle of monkey diarrhea. No matter how you try to justify it, or pat yourselves on the back for doing great jobs... it's a shit game now because of you. Y'all keep on giving the players the middle finger, and you keep expecting us to reward you for the abuse. I've had it with you narcissistic fuckwads and your myopic policies of ineptitude.

I love how FoS' goodbye thread just became a childish eff you banter.

The magic of The Vault.

Yo, SunFeather, could you leave us a few exploits that we can use to give them hell? A way to dupe astral shards, mayhaps?

Code for "Wasn't my fault".

SolarDawning wrote on Feb 3rd, 2014 at 11:14pm:
The only projects I ever really owned were my own pet projects- things like augment system, different variants of loot on harder difficulties, and the revamped cosmetic system with equippable cosmetic items.

The cosmetic armor caused problems when deployed to live.  You should have tested this.

The different variants of loot potency such as "Ghostbane IV" that are non-evident from the title and can only be revealed by direct inspection of the item sucks.  Thanks also for shitting all over the first ice games recipes, BTA lootgen being one ML lower than non-bta, and the ML values of things like Potency and Invulnerability.

The augment slot system does not suck.  In fact, "Good Job".  Having it come at the expense of Guild augments does suck.

SolarDawning wrote on Feb 3rd, 2014 at 11:14pm:
A big part of why I left was due to my frustration with the results of itemization in Update 19 and onward, and the fruitless results of my arguments with the lead designer over it.

If you were peers, it would have been the responsibility of both of you to find common ground. That you were having "fruitless arguments" with your superior indicates a failure on your part to craft a compelling argument AND a disregard for his status as "boss".

Learn to find ways to align your goals with those of the other involved parties. It takes two people to argue.

SolarDawning wrote on Feb 3rd, 2014 at 11:14pm:
As you all saw, it eventually got to the point where I went into the office onto a weekend and added new treasure effects and items in myself.

What reasonable person could expect this to go wrong?

SolarDawning wrote on Feb 3rd, 2014 at 11:14pm:
Those changes were unapproved, and much of it was pulled out the next week, though I think bits and pieces of it had been filtered back in by DocOct and Melange.
Still, it put PurpleFooz (the lead designer) and I on edge with each-other.

Shocker!

SolarDawning wrote on Feb 3rd, 2014 at 11:14pm:
I had it when he told me that the Shadowfell Conspiracy expansion wasn't supposed to be "endgame", since there would be another level cap increase in a year.
How can you release an "expansion" without endgame content or rewards?
I reached the point where the constant arguments weren't worth it, and I decided to look elsewhere.

More code for "Wasn't my fault", but now with "see?  I said 'Endgame', so you can tell I'm sympathetic and that it really really wasn't me"

SolarDawning wrote on Feb 3rd, 2014 at 11:14pm:
I think DDO's senior designers are all good people and are on the right track now. With luck, you'll all enjoy what is coming in Update 21. Steel's raids are badass.

I doubt you'll be hearing any more from me. I'm on my way to California, and from there, will be fully invested in an upcoming online persistent world game. =)

Goodbye!

You are going to continue to have arguments until you accept there may be more than one "correct" way to do something and that other people see and know things that you do not.

Testing your product wouldn't hurt, either.

Most importantly, admit it when you screw up, take ownership of your mistakes, and learn from them.  Seriously - it cannot be everyone else's fault every time.

I think your arrogance and self importance were very damaging to the game.  Thanks for screwing things up and then leaving in a huff.

I've been trying just that.

I found the entertaining and somewhat disturbing Goolan thread. And the Ungood meltdown (hehe, he's a guildie, making it an extra special find). And a whole lot of drama. Still searching though. There are some awesome finds there, but no astral shard duping mechanism available. So far.

But what I was asking for is a yet-unknown "game feature" that FoS knows that he could tell us just to make things more exciting at his former office.
