I agree. If they have laid off one of their most senior guys who was one of the ones who had a chance of understanding the spaghetti code, doesn't sound like they are really interested in making any further real changes. That plus laying off a good content person doesn't exactly give me the warm fuzzies...

I suspect broken things will stay broken even more from now on. DDO appears fragile, and if those with the background leave, it will become more so.

Lol no. HE HIMSELF asked for feedback, reviews, suggestions on a shitload of things and we were just IGNORED.

You make any excuse you want for him. We are still better without him.

that have been completely ignored as "low business priority", usually related to technical debt that both I and the testers know will cause infinite misery in the future, if not for us, then for whichever poor sod comes after who has to maintain and re-test the shit lasagna being piled onto our plates by bureaucrats.

Yeah, this happens often, and it's usually the result of a shortsighted manager/corporate culture that truncates the cost equations way too early.

If you don't factor in the extra effort to make additions around buggy systems, re-testing costs, customer support costs, and loss of customers in the future, many very expensive bugs look quite cheap to live with. And they are - for a little while.

If you plan to pad your resume and get out in a year or two, or at least be prepared to abandon ship as soon as your poor decisions start catching up with you, that approach can be profitable for the individual. The problem is, it isn't really best for the company in the long haul.

I think a lot of what Rowan is struggling under is the technical debt (nice phrase!) left. But unfortunately, he still seems to be running a deficit rather than working to pay down the debt. I think he's running a smaller deficit, but still a deficit.

Maybe running a deficit at this point and hoping for an effective stimulus really is the best option he has left, but I know for me and the crowd I play with, nothing he's talking about is likely to get us to spend again as long as the problems are still there. So putting new stuff before fixes results in cost - cost - payoff, but putting fixes before new stuff would be cost - payoff - cost.

Oh well, I'm actually looking forward to maintenance mode, I'll get to spend more time playing and less time trying to figure out how to work around what they just meddled with.

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

Truth be told, DDO needs a solid maintenance cycle to iron out a lot of the bugs.
Whether they've picked the right people to let go or not is a different thing altogether, and despite little to no knowledge of coding structure, in their position I'd be sorely tempted to tear it down and start over. I'm pretty sure that's too much of a "tough choice" for Varg to make though.

Honestly we already had burned up that one when we came with the Moon phases.

It was a little bit more than 10 years ago and it was about downtime for the brand new MMS centers. ( the system that handle all the MMSs from a telco )... and we we just couldn't tell them one more time that it was due to yet another crappy Sparc CPU that fried. So we had to become inventive.
Cosmic Ray was one of the first bullet we punched to hide fried CPUs...
And after a long line of less and less plausible causes came the Moon phases. ( after that one we were flat our of excuses... but at least the system was  stabilized somewhat : every CPU that had to fry had fried... The new ones were more resilient )

I used to blame El Niño.  Some clients would laugh.  Some would just believe me.  It worked as an explanation more often than not, though.

Yeah, I agree, they've needed that for a while. And they wouldn't even need to make it *just* maintenance, they could probably work in new quests that didn't change any mechanics.

MajMal scoffed when I suggested that Turbine might be operating under the assumption that they could be profitable without selling anything if they reduced costs far enough.

Love him or hate him, he was one of the most active devs on the official forums for a really long time.  Not so much the last few months but with the amount of shit he got I can't blame him.

are devs in finance now or something?  the dev managers might get budgets for their depts/projects, but most employees outside of finance depts don't have a freaking clue about how well their company is doing.

didn't maj post something about how Turbine had this good/great year in 2013?  so how much does he really know regarding the numbers.  not saying he's stupid, just he probably has no access to that information and outside of a vague notion or internal rumor, he probably has no idea about such things.

to expect majmal or anyone else who works for Turbine to post the absolute truth about upper level Turbine plans and decisions would be foolish. We are game players not stock holders. We will most likely find out this game is done when they stop selling multi month subscriptions. But honestly this is just fucking swords and sorcery not drones and arab terrorists.
