All working to plan. When they shut down ML they no longer needed Squeak and Kookie. Kookie is more attractive so he stays on to look after Lamania.

Nothing to see here. Bugs will be released according to the original schedule.

Well, it won’t be Asheron’s Call.

At this point, “A Killer Year™” should become Turbine’s next meme.

Wow, that's awesome! Sad that it's ending development, but honest and open communication with the players?! Loving the game enough to let the community set up private servers?

I hope that when DDO's time comes we have someone that enlightened at the helm.

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

This happens in the gaming industry all the time. 2weeks ago the guy who owns Irrational Studio's shut the whole place down and kept 15 employees, because in his words he wants to try something new.

Maj - I'm sure there was ramp-up for the new property you guys are working on - are there plans to get some staff back after that title goes live?

Layoffs don't surprise me - what does is they usually hit *after* a title goes live and the staff needed to get the product off the ground are no longer needed.

Tell that to a Frog Boss.
( firing people is a pain in the ass in France.... on the other hand finding a job is also a pain in the ass ( there's a few exceptions though... if you want to be a plumber, an electrician, a butcher, a baker, a mechanical manufacturing technician, and several other you'll have many opportunities ) )

Consider that a company like Disney firing 500 people here would make the news headline before Ukraine, the Olympic games, and the latest political scandal.

Disney cut 500 because they have put out a lot poor product over the last 2 years and sales have been very poor.

The 2 big exceptions are mobile games for the Japanese market and Disney Inifinity.

Exactly! It happens all the time, and if Turbine had kept it below 1/2 of 1% like Disney did, we wouldn't be worried at all. It's the scope of the change that worries us.

Unfortunately, Turbine is better known for big changes than for smart ones  Undecided

Yeah but over here people are treated like chattel.  It's not uncommon to see companies also have a large contingent of 'temporary' but full time people (many times with 5+ years of being on the job) to avoid paying any benefits.  Microsoft for instance, does this.

It's also vogue in the software industry to post job adverts with 30+ years of experience required - for a job paying entry level - mostly so they can then apply for a H1B visa and get someone from India to come take the spot.

Job satisfaction and loyalty are not directly measurable and tractable on a management dashboard.  Then again - you should also know that France is used as the boogy-man of the worst possible outcome of Unions and 'commie-socialist' policies in this country - so I doubt we'll ever see any real change in labor law (at least in my lifetime).

Disney has 150,000 employee's, so 500 is nothing.

Turbine smokes a third of its employee's before their latest game is even in beta. Have you heard rumors of the next wave yet?

That percentage is so small, I almost wonder if they just used a RIF to remove bad apples with added protection.  I'm surprised the usual wealth envy idiots haven't spewed "but CEO" comments on all this.

One thing for everyone who is a "skeptic" on this issue: Insurance companies are basing their underwriting on the assumption that it is real. They are refusing to write policies on homes that are likely to be in danger from rising seas 20 years from now, even though the resale rate of the homes is so high that they could keep writing policies for another 10 years and still not have to pay out on 1 policy in 5, but that would be irresponsible. Unethical, as well, but that's never stopped anyone before.

The layoffs were 1/4 of Disney's game division.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/07/business/media/disneys-game-and-internet-divis...

But yeah if you look at Turbine the same way you just looked at Disney - Well Time Warner employes 34,000 employees so this was just a drop in the bucket and so much statistical noise.

I'd have to say anyone losing their job is a sign of bad things and not good. I don't fire people that work for me because I'm in a good mood. Percentage of company is not really applicable.

PS: Most times I close down vacancies first and claim it was retrenchment. That way most people keep their jobs, some get promotions and I get to sleep at night.

Nothing new here....

It's a common joke in Froggy Lands... 20 years ago when I was looking for my first job I was reading job posts that were basically saying the following :
- Engineer from a Grande école with 5 year experience, no more than 30 old.
- PhD with 4 Years experience, no more than 25 years old.

If you get your baccalauréat at 18 ( you're lucky ), you have two years ( Math Sup/Math Spé [ yup that's Superior Math and Special Math... Math are tough ] ), then 3 years Engineering school ( Grande Ecole ).
Add one year of Military Joy along the way and if you're lucky you can hit the restriction... But if for whatever reason you get unlucky ( 4 month Delay for the Military Joy for example, if it's in the middle of the Engineering School, it just FUBAR one full year and catching up is going to be a bitch. ) you will not meet the requirement.

The best one is the PhD though... since it is not possible to meet the age requirement, unless you managed to skip the Military Joy. ( 18+7 to PhD = 25 + 1 year of Military Joy  = Over 25 . )

That's when I stopped looking at the Diploma and Age requirements and just answered to job posts that were in my competence domains... sometime HR drones are silly people.
