With all the promising steps forward turbine is taking lately with this product, I wanted to see what some of its more devoted players believed would come next in this exciting climb to the top of the shitpile.

I voted 2, sorry maj

Server merge. Too many people are leaving the game to keep all the current servers viable.

As "Server Merge" = "cost money upfront", I doubt this is a likely outcome.

I understand that keeping underutilized servers running also costs money, leaving them running allows them to pretend that everything is fine a little longer.

What evidence is there that turbine treats DDO as an ongoing concern by planning ahead?

Server Merge involve a lot of nightmarish things and costs.

Also the previous merges occurred long before FTP, I don't think the scripts used at that time works anymore. ( and since they seem to be unable to fix a simple script like the Lammania character copy, the chances to fix a complex set of scripts like a server merge package are very low. )

Last in these days of Virtualization, it's easier to merge virtually servers on a single hardware server while leaving the actual servers alone than to merge logically the servers.

Anyway, I'm for Donuts.

I went server merge, because running servers costs money long term and it really does look like WB has made the choice to shift into maintence mode soon.

Lowering ongoing costs is a big there, you know, servers and employees.

If they would go to maintenance modus, wouldn´t they offer more discounts? Point boundles, adventure packs and so on.

I know that speculating is human nature. We love to speculate. But I prefer to avoid speculation, I'd rather wait and see what happens. Technically Munkenmo is right, since U21 will be out in 1 week.

What makes you think they don't have all the servers hosted on one piece of hardware? It feels like the game runs off a 486 with Doom loaded for the technicians.

I guess Azog is right. It will be a vicious circle. They won't introduce much new content and also the advertisements/publicity will decrease. Both of which will prevent new users coming in to the game. Then you will only have the old users to sell stuff that have already bought most of what they want. How can you sell the things which they don't want that much or does not prefer to buy or think it is not worth the money. You make discounts or reduce the prices all together. At that point snake is eating itself already and when that phase finishes also then the game is literally over.

If the QA team were dissolved... would there really be any earthly way of being able to tell the difference?

Of course! If QA were dissolved, bugs that benefit players would last as long as bugs that hurt players.

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

My bet would be against Turbine using server virtualization.

First of all, as a method of hedging against ever increasing memory and processor needs, virtualization has been a sensible thing to do for over a decade.  This is all the reason anyone would need to rule it out as a path Turbine would consider.

Second, I remember "The server that hosted the API has a hardware problem that is beyond our ability to resolve" being trotted out as the reason for it's absence.

Oh I'm fairly sure they don't use it right now, but it's something they could do...

Since I'm also fairly sure that they rent the space for their own full racks of servers...
I don't expect anything happening anytime soon.
It costs more in Notwork Maintenance, Database Maintenance and Customer support to deal with a Merge and/or a Virtualization than just leave the 5 Blade Centers alone. All that to free up one single Rack cabinet. ( more or less )

Heh.  Thanks for the chuckle.

I also agree with Flav, in that it's unlikely to be cost effective to do a merge, especially considering their apparent current level of expertise.  It's hard to justify putting work into something vs just leaving what's in place (and presumably "paid for") alone.  Unless the rent on the rack space is just astronomical.  Pure conjecture, of course...

QA team is dissolved and offered positions for Infinite Crisis at less money.   (IC is open Beta in eleven days.)

DDO goes the way of Asheron's Call, mostly maintenance mode, within two years.

Doughnuts was a close second.
