DDO: worth returning?

no, I don't mean for a refund.
I have played many computer games since leaving Khyber, some MMOs among them, but nothing has quite measured up to DDO. Perhaps this is because it was my first MMO. Regardless, before I download and install the Turbine launcher I must ask the best critics of DDO if it is worth playing again.

Is the game still fun?
and are the two expansion packs worth purchasing and exploring?

I would only buy the first expansion.

And about having fun... depends... if you still like heroic TRing there hasn't changed much apart from making it easier to get from 1-20.

If you are interested in endgame raids... only 2-4 raids who give items which are interesting at level cap.

I hate it when people make threads like this.  Does it really take that much effort to download and install the launcher and see for yourself?  You're basically asking other people whether you will enjoy something or not... I don't know what you'll enjoy doing in your spare time.

Yeah, I know I sound a bit cranky, I'm just sick of all the "comtemplating coming back, should I?" threads on the motherforums.

The game itself really hasn't changed.  The combat system, quest system, and UI are all the same.  If you enjoyed those before you will do so again.  Depending on how long you have been away, there is new content to explore.  If it's been a year or more, there's some stuff to do.  Lots of players I know play for a few months or so every year.  They let the new content build up and then play for 3-4 months and then take a break.  Treat DDO like Assassin's Creed or any other game that issues a new version every year.  Play it for a while, then play something else while the devs make some more content.

I have to say that I really like the new fire dragon raid.  Yes, it's simple.  Yes, it's just a big boss fight.  But that's okay.

"WHEEEE!  It's a dragon!  Smash, slice, bash!  Okay, go hit the thing in the middle for a couple of seconds.  Can we get some folks to kill trash?  Okay, cool, kill the dragons some more."

That's pretty much all the instructions you need for the raid, but I still find it fun.  I also still like Tangleroot somehow, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.  Wink

Yes the game is still fun.

The first expansion is about a pimp who does nothing and two chicks,
one light one dark fighting over a weave. Like the ghetto, only in pixels.

Hmms time to experiment, maybe this is why they are taking down servers!!! El Pedo killable would offend too many people.

Honestly I think I would trade good exploit info for that, just to have fun...
Hate Elpedo.

They've added a new skill called, "duping" as well to the game. It's like these fun easter eggs in the game and if you find them you get free stuff.

In reference to OP, I love Post U19. Yes balance isn't perfect, and some builds dominate end game. Some things don't change, Pen and Paper had the same issues, the more you add the harder it is to balance. Play to have fun.

I play non-cookie cutter builds and do just fine in EE (epic elite) content. Skill makes up for a lot, builds sometimes allow people to enjoy the game with less skill. Who cares. Its a game - play to have fun.

Cool new slayer zones, cool new quests, and finally a few raids. Sadly the game is missing raids to occupy hard core raiders and a few hours of coding and making old raids epic with epic loot and allow old crap to be upgradeable would fix the stagnation of the raid scene.

Enhancements is the major change since you stopped playing. Multi-class is very viable for many builds unlike years ago. Also lots of shortcuts have been added to avoid stuff like grinding exp or waiting 3 days to repeat a raid (both cost money or skillz) and permanent quest exp decay resets some every day. In general the game is faster now.

Why are you here then?

On second thought, buy MotU and come back to Khyber, raid and pug scene is still pretty active...
