It's not 'needed'. Just a matter of convenience .... no need for a table.

I currently use a mousepad on the arm of the couch ... If I had a trackball that I liked I wouldn't need even that. I would also be able to move my arm off the edge of the couch and change positions for my shoulder and wrist and make playing easier ...

So yeah not needed but certainly convenient.
