I feel dirty
Aug 9th, 2014 at 8:27am
Print Post
I'm fairly active on StackOverflow, and every once in a while I see a side bar with job openings related to the tags I'm posting in.

Thursday they showed me a job opening from Turbine/WB!

I feel dirty. Why are you showing that to me, have my answers been receiving down votes lately?

Do you think I've fallen so low that I'd fling myself into the career black hole that is Turbine?

The job is for a SQL & Mobile developer. Or maybe it was 2 developers, I averted my eyes as quickly as I could.

But still I feel tarnished.

And worried, too! What if they finally get someone who *does* know SQL and can start writing queries to find us out? Oh, wait, Turbine. Nobody smart enough to be good at SQL would be dumb enough to want that on their resume  Roll Eyes

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

I won't even waste my time testing their damn products for free anymore, I can't even imagine trying to work for them.  Try and take a shower but I'm not sure if it will be enough to wash away that filthy feeling.

Turbine policy - glitches and poor coding resulting in interference of your game play or enjoyment will be ignored.  Glitches or poor coding on the developers side that at all benefit your game play or enjoyment will result in your character being banned and/or items from your inventory deleted.  Please report all bugs via our bug report...when it works.

We all know they need a SQL DBA ( or at least somebody who has a clue with SQL )... just for DDO it would probably be a one Year full time project, just to fix all the things that needs to be fixed in the SQL database. ( and to make the important changes so that it's foolproof and disconnect proof... so that we can go back to having all the UI open at the same time. )

This would require that DDO admit that the changes to the ui are a mistake, therefore will not happen.

Seriously, did you just suggest that they would revert a new system to benefit the players if only they could get someone competent to "fix old code"?

Laughed out loud.

It has been admitted (by the Kobold that Jumped Ship, but not just him ) that this particular change was to fight DC duping.
So it never was a mistake and it can be reverted.

No, not really that suggestion... I suggested that they get rid of a clunky ( and not particullarly working ) exploit plug once they have a guy with a clue at how to plug said exploit from the back-end side... we have discussed how the DC exploit is easy to plug, from a Database point of view if transactions are used, here already.

First : I'm paid too much compared to what they would offer in my current job.
Second : I'd need to relocate to the other side of the Pond, that means lots of expenses... as I'd have to buy again everything electrical.
Third : see 1, why in hell would I leave a 45K+ Euro job where I'm one of the local experts & relocate to another continent to be the new kid ?
Fourth : 25 Days of Vacation + 3 more days for age in the company + 12 Days of Work Time Reduction + 12 Days of overtime recovery... That does not compare to what vacation they can offer.
Fifth : Full spectrum medical coverage... Froggy Way, with extensions from the current job.
Last : weak reason : family... since I' don't have to drag a wife and kids around it's a cheap excuse... but still my Family lives in Froggy Land, and I'm not ready ( yet ) to see them less than once a year.

You really expect me to become an inside man ? you'd have better chances talking Solar Dawning into coming back to Turbine to unfuck what he fucked up.

All the rest aside, lolwut.  Not like Turbine's particularly applicable, but a decent DBA starts at about 120K+ around here, plus bonuses.  If you're *good*, it's more like 180.

His kids can get pretty much free education in France.
He doesn't need to save a lot of money for his retirement because the state will provide it.

money (even 180k) cant buy 72 days of paid vacation. Somedays American's will wake up to this reality. 180k trapped working 80 hour weeks in a shitty job ain't worth a damn. There's no taxes on having time for vacations and quality of life.

Flav is right.

45K+ Euros... $60K+
I'm not a DBA, I just have a clue ( as in I can do a lot of things in a Sybase DB, but I habe no formal training on it ).

With your 120K  you have to pay for a retirement plan ( I don't ), you have to pay for medical stuff ( I don't ), and more...
So in the end you'll probably net be far from the 60K.

Illetirated wrote on Aug 10th, 2014 at 9:01pm:

Well, up to university it's basically free ( you just have to pay for a few books, pens and paper ), in University you have to pay something... but it's a joke compared to University costs in the US or the UK ( Up to 400ish Euros in normal Uni... it can be quite more expensive for some private schools... but well they are private owned )

And yes you can't beat the 50ish days of vacation with work time that rarely go over 40ish hours a week.

*shrug*  I work from home.  How's that fit in to the vacation days?   Grin  I'm not going to defend America's labour laws to the ends of the earth, but there's certainly another tier if it's considered "skilled."

I've always wondered about the term skilled. Fast food-Trained for weeks. Stop/Slow sign holder- trained for 2 hrs and tested for 20 min. Fastfood wage, $7/hr. Stop/Slow sign holder, $14-$35/hr. How does holding a sign equal more skill?

The holder is being paid extra for hazards encountered during the job.

Imagine him/her as being the human skilled equivalent of a well-paid pole.

So getting held up at gunpoint isnt a job hazard?

Not quite the same hazard as a soccer mom driving at the stop/slow sign fella, steering with her knee because she's texting with one hand and using the other to keep the two toddlers in the back seat who are juiced up on sugar and their anti-adhd meds from   climbing out the sunroof.
