2015 Producer's Letter
Jan 8th, 2015 at 5:54pm
Print Post
The producer's letter was posted about an hour ago.

Some things worth mentioning are -

1) Severlin is officially the new executive producer. He said some things in his letter that might lead one to believe that he isn't so familiar with the actual game. For example, he referred to epic destinies as "epic enhancement trees". This concerns me.

2) Monster champions will have a chance to drop an ingredient or collectible ("mysterious fragments") that can be turned in for junk.

3) They plan on adding a new class, Warlock, this year.

4) Epic Shav and epic vale should be coming this year. This will include "corrupted greensteel" that will probably be limited to non-weapon slots to avoid either invalidating or being invalidated by TF and sentient weapons.

5) Level 30, obviously.

6) They seem to have pushed the mabar replacement down to next Autumn. We'll also be getting a mimic festival for some reason.

1) Might as well call them epic enhancement trees.  That's practically what they are

2) Another new system that will be half-implanted

3) Might be interesting.

4) Yawn

5) Just a matter of time

6) Whatever they bring out will probably suck.

Wonder why Warlock? they already have Sorcs.

I should also mention how typical Turbine it is to make the guy who fucked up Barbs and had a Hamp hardon gets to be the producer, guess the janitor already has a second job.

I've never been a fan of shavarath, so i havent played that one to death.

But since I'm not a fan, I'm not really looking forward to it.

Looks like the big desert expansion thing has been shelved then. That reads as a getting it tucked up for maintenance mode letter to me. I like Vale and Amrath though, so I am not too bothered about that. Temple of Elemental Evil could be good, just hope it's not a run once and explore everything then done as the Haunted Halls were for me.

Dear players,

The D&D rules you were familiar with were too simple to understand, so we're continuing our move away from them to needlessly confusing subsystems that will make your play experience less fun and invalidate old builds and loot. We hope you have fun working out what the fuck MRR, PRR, MP, SP, RP, CL, MCL and all the other bullshit we made up whilst drunk means.

Love,

People who don't know how to fix their own mistakes cleanly

At least we have a Producer who actually interacts on the forums, although with that said, he'll probably stop now......    Undecided
I'm in two minds about the DDO knowledge.
Sure, some contextual knowledge is necessary to make informed decisions. And sometimes being too close to the detail can be a bad thing as "you can't see the wood for the trees."
As a developer, he did need to know his stuff, but as Producer he can get away with less knowledge.
To compensate, he should rely on the PC and the more experienced forumites to let them provide balanced analysis.  There is no way he can ever learn as much as many of the hardcore players know, so he should listen to them.  Based on history it probably won't happen though, but let's see.
It would be interesting to see whether the choices for 2015 are his choices, which would mean he has listened to the players because Epic GS was off the table in 2014?

I like the paraphrasing.    Smiley
I don't recall Sev using the term junk.   Grin

3) They plan on adding a new class, Warlock, this year.

Not sure the game really needs resources diverted into this atm.
New classes require differentiating (not sure what they will do in terms of DDO mechanics to make it different from Sorc?  Maybe like the Drow Priestesses?   Cheesy), it will also need to be released with enhancement trees, maybe an ED, and then there is balancing - lots of work.  Probably better spent elsewhere when there are so few resources left.

In a growing game, adding new ways to play/experience it is critical to keep the enthusiasm up.  When a game is on the decline and entering the twilight phase, not sure how another class will help?  Some might come back for a few days, play it, find it is inevitably badly bugged (until 3 or 4 patches in) and leave again in disgust.

This is a logical choice.
This is an easy out with Epic Vale already mostly done for them.
I know people want new content, but if we look at their new content released in U24, it was pretty uninspiring.  The reality is they don't have the budget for resources to do much new content.  TOEE might be it for 2015.

Pseudonym wrote on Jan 8th, 2015 at 5:54pm:
5) Level 30, obviously.

Not so sure that is a good idea.
It doesn't really add much to character power anyway, just makes the ETR treadmill longer.
Get your ETR's done before then.    Undecided

Disappointing - was curious to see what it was going to be, and I need more Mabar items crafted.   Undecided

WTF?
Well, we know what the "if you like chests, you'll like this" comment was awhile ago.
That sounds positively annoying, not fun.
I guess the griefing and ultimate early termination of the event should be entertaining to watch.

Epic vale was played in circa 09. Calling it half done is slightly disingenuous.

Correction made for clarity.

I wasn't intentionally seeking to understate the development already done.  If it were ready to publish they would have done it already in 2014 - but held off for a reason that I can only guess at.

I believe it was around post beta development in 2009, but it was shelved, so I was thinking that some of the code may be out of date - particularly as each quest has to be custom designed.
Some of the way things were done may be voluntarily revised to with new textures/objects/mobs/traps/loot they might seek to revise it.

well as long as these new ingredients go into bags, we'll be seeing the first uber greensteel items within the first 2 days of release. So that's cool.

No, the janitor can't be producer,he's overqualified - he plays the game  Undecided

I'm not surprised Vanishing Viv lived up to her unflattering nickname. I hope her replacement does better, but I'm not banking (TP) on it before I see some solid performance.

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

You can see some of his performance in the changes to Barbs, Hamp, and his "Armor Up" initiative.

I so have no idea how they will implement warlock.

Most of the other stuff wont be anything new or what we havent seen yet.
Temple will be just a copy paste of some corridors with epic cr 98 ogres and kobolds. Its great as setting but i expect a fuckup.
Vale will be a fuckup with some kind epic gsteel that will eliminate thforged and with bugged epic gsteel wraps that wont work for years to come.
Since shavarath and vale is bound i dont expect anythin in plane of amarth, i expect just epic shroud /why? because its turbine i dont expect much here.

No word about sentient weapons, no idea how to see them in vale so prolly a system they gave up on.
Slight chance that will be in epic shroud.
Yay for a cr 150 harry.

So back to the only interesting thing, warlock.
IT was a really good and interesting class in pen and was very good translated to never2, was quie powerful as well.

Some kind lets say semi debuff nuker caster with no blue bar with ability to change spells by combining it with other spells.
Should be interesting, wonder what they will add to its past life as well

Yeah fucker has no clue, and the past 6 months show he doesn't adjust when it's pointed out. Nothing worse than arrogance, except ignorant arrogance. Am I right!

That asshat had such a  boner for the unneeded HampRevamp, that he queered the Barb class just to be it's vehicle.

Let's be honest, indications are that he is just another Turbine talking head that has his eyes on the door out and is going to push through whatever shitty idea he has so he can pad his "implement and oversaw" list on his CV, when applying for the new job.

Sorry to tell you but he ignored mountains of complaints, data, alternatives, PM's, etc.... in the lead up to the barb change when word got out what he had in mind. Totally blew anything that wasn't what he had in mind off.
