	Hmmm...wondering if the rest of their funding is contingent on raising the $600,000? If I were a venture capitalist, I'd want some proof that there's sufficient interest in the game itself before I funded it. This Kickstarter might be the way the potential main source of funding and OtherSide mutually agreed upon to prove such interest?

As FTS says, I'd be surprised if they could build the game for US$500k with the crew they already have onboard. $500k doesn't go very far once salaries, rent and development costs come in. They have self funded till now (~3 mths?), and my assumption is that this current funding is to supplement their own capital raising and share the development risk with the "fans". Ostensibly, make their seed funding go further. Once they have a more mature beta product, they might be able to secure a publisher to fund the rest of the development. That's my view on how I read between the lines on this.
