I have wondered about things like this. I know nothing about kickstarter really, but in these scenarios is anyone required to give back the money?

I do wonder how contractual the pledges are.
You see lots of telethons raising money where a large % of donations are never received.

I see there are two $10k pledges.....
Why would you do that unless they're joke pledges?

I can understand people putting up $100 - $150 which is about the cost of a collector's edition game and you get the game and various trinkets.  No real risk.

But 4/5" printed statues of your character - wt?  Seriously what would you do with a 3D printed copy of an ingame toon?  That'll impress the girls.....

Someone has been creative with the tiers - I expected maybe 3 levels of funding, but they kept on going up to $10k.  Simply wow.

And frankly, for $5k - $10k, that's a financial investment (not entertainment spending) and I would expect a % of profits for that much doh sunk into a "potential" game.

The graphics look a bit dated, but that's not necessarily a deal breaker for me if the game play is good.  I wish you'd reconsider the 1st person view though.

Honestly, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if those were "get the ball rolling" pledges by the creators. I wouldn't want people to think I am apposed to this, it actually makes a lot of sense from a business perspective.

Make the first person optional and I would be interested. Until then, I would rather login to DDO and pretend I give a shit about it.

Why? Because some people have a ton of money.
None of the creators donated 10 grand.
It was Brian Fargo, the creator of another game company and I forget the third.

I'm about to go spend 4K on dinner for my wife and I next week. I could spend 10k on your game or I could buy her an hand bag as a surprise, or both.

My point, I could easily drop 10k on your game but the reward for money spent just isn't there. I'm your target audience and I want more.

Oh, I understand that people have money.  I admire your Chutzpah in putting it there.  I don't fault you for putting it there as much as questioning the judgment of those who do pay it.

I live comfortably and can spend what I want on games, but that doesn't mean I would ever spend $10k (or even $1k) on just giving it to a game in development.
If I wanted to sink $10k or more into a game at this stage, I would become an investor and seek some financial reward for my risk.

I suppose if you're Bill Gates, then you wouldn't care about ROI, but don't know how many "Bill" types are out there and interested in computer games.

kickstarter is more like prepurchase with option to get some extras (even silly extras for big money) than real investments.

if u want real investments, try contact company directly and see if they want to make some deal.

I know couple guys here, who are working at Warhorse on Deliverance now. they nmade pretty succesful campaign on Kickstarter too. But having succesful KS campain was one of biggest condition they have from their main investor to give them more resources for development. Thus achieving their primary goal was ment more like test of real demand for the product. Well good for them they got the money they, ve got.

Its quite surprising this project (UUA) has not bad start being based just on couple pictures and real good names (at least thats what was published so far). Doesnot mean i dont wish good luck to them:) opposite is the truth - i d really want to see this game come  to life.

and for FPS view - agreed i d love to have TPS -> FPS zoom option. FPS is imho bad choice for "melee" game

I usually play these types of games in first person view, but I still view third person view as a necessity. If you have to navigate on varying surface geometry, or need to know your immediate surroundings while still focusing on something ahead, TP perspective is useful.
Climbing cliff faces in Skyrim would have been annoying. Pickpocketting would have been if they didn't have the indicator to tell you if someone had noticed you.

Wait.  This game isn't an mmo.  It's a single player experience (co-op a possibility down the line).  Ultima underworld 3 as it were.

About first person vs third person view, it would be a shame if the developers made 3rd person available, like what they did with thief.  I would say I hope they stick with 1st person view only, but who knows...

For some people...not ususally in gaming 10 grand is nothing.

As someone who spent time in TV, the budgets even for big ticket games is a drop in the bucket to a network, and frankly for the people that run them. Most of your cable networks make over a billion a year...before advertising and content. Just off of cable and sat fees. How's that for a ground floor? Gaming even publishers don't have a safety net like that.
Anyway, 10 grand...it's nothing to some people.

Having seen many Kickstarters for upcoming games, I have to say that people pledging 10k is pretty common, but it still shocks me given that the rewards for it (other than helping the developers make the game) are usually laughable.

It's a common mistake to think money is the only motivator. But it isn't, and to even offer a reward to someone who donates, who isn't motivated by the thought of ROI, is an insult and a demotivator. Just think if you started paying your spouse after sex. Divorce on the way.

Sorry to come across all capitalist.     Embarrassed
The lens I was viewing it through is one where speculative hobby/entertainment expenditure does not go into the $10k zone.
Sure I know people who spend big money on their hobbies like a jet ski, motoX bike, even miniatures - but they have an asset so to speak - something to show for their money.

I understand that people do have big coin (ILiveYourDreams will be along soon to tell us about it), but I just find the connection between someone who has that much money that they don't care about throwing away $10k and computer gaming to be tenuous.  Most of the people I know who have that much wealth, spend it on more mainstream gambling vices and other (ahem) services.

My perspective is that even if you resurrected a franchise that I loved enormously as a kid, that I would be happy to put $100-$200 towards it, but not any more, and it has nothing to do with not being able to afford it.
I guess we all have different value trade-offs on what we measure as utility.

Anyway back into my capitalist bunker to count my coins.
Scrooge McDuck signing off.
