I expect they will lose interest after "Potatoe" which will be somewhere shortly after 3, but before 5 clicks.

A server merge is much more than that bro.
Unlike a toon tfr, it has to be guilds, shared banks, tr caches, toon favour - everything.
Then they have to deal with the naming clashes with some error capture scripts to auto change names or flag them for manual tfr.
We're not talking overly challenging stuff for competent programmers, but it's finding that C word (competent, not the other one) at Turdbine that troubles me.

The rename convention is already established. The character transfer script adds a currently adds a -1 and grants a free rename token. IF they do whatever they did in the past to merge servers, it would add -Ghallanda to conflicted character names and guild names.

Favor already transfers over with character transfers. Guilds are easily recreated on the other side if necessary since they simply have less variables than even a single character. (Name, roster, ship)

TR caches and Shared bank space are the wildcards. I'm not sure how they would handle that.

One would hope. And personally Favor doesnt need to transfer as long as it gets TR cach'd kinda thing. Frankly, why kill extra  opportunities for TP?

I know they have done server mergers in the past and the methods used.  During one of my walkabouts, I came back to find several of my toons had been renamed (despite already being on the destination server).  No rename tokens were in my inventory.

But it has been many years since they did that - I doubt anyone remains from that time, and the game and data structures may have changed in that time (eg. max number of inventory tabs has increased - the previous script may have been hardcoded only to copy 5 inv tabs across).

I thought someone mentioned earlier that favor and raid completions don't tfr over.  Apologies if i misread.
Favor would be a big one for those who have ground out the 5,000 favor.  If it does, then no probs.

Creating new guilds on the other side sounds easy, but I think they would need to bring across guild structures.
Can you imagine the angst it would cause trying to rebuild guild rosters in larger guilds.  Lots of little things crop up like dormant players or entire guilds that go dormant for a year or two and then return.  You come back and can't remember the toon names or guildies?
I can imagine the mischief that could be done if G'land were merged into another server and some players on the destination server set up Guilds with the names of all the prominent G'land guilds.

The renames are done by chat command, not like the DDOstore renames.

/rename dropbear

You could try it on your refugees, I'm not sure if there's a time limit.

Favor, flagging, and completions stay with the character. Other concerns are justified.

On the other hand, (if any could possibly believe Turbine being capable of clever trickery at this point) they could be setting the stage for a justification to merge servers without the self fulfilling DOOM!!!!1 prophecy that would normally go along with it.

Wow, that is pure evil genius! The populace widely bought the "we abandoned the API server for Hardware reasons", so cary it to the next logical step!

This is being done to do some work on the server ahead of the weekend. While we don't have a firm uptime to announce, we would expect the downtime to last a couple of hours.

I don't, no.  The other problem (besides everybody mentioning guilds, etc.)... who the hell's gonna do that?  They're short staffed as it is.  There's no way they could pull it off in any reasonable amount of time.  I think even moving Wayfinder's population somewhere would be a nightmare.  Hands up, anybody who doesn't have at least an alt there.  Anybody?  They have to move that.  Then six months later you try and run it, and you're burdened.  Open ticket, wait.

If your scripts aren't bulletproof, you're dealing with a lot of manual stuff.  They'd have to hire Amazon's Christmas labour force to make it work.

LMAO, this!

It would be more funny, though, if it weren't for the fact that my characters would get screwed up, not anything a Turdbin employee cares about  Cry

It amazes me that any G-Landers still waste their time with this shit.

Rediscover the joys of single player gaming. I swear you won't look back.

This game is not worth the shit.

Yeah, we should call up turbine and tell them that WE'RE sorry.

Speaking of calling them, has any Ghallandite tried calling turbine support in an effort to finangle some free server transfers using the ole' "the server is down more than it's up" complaint?

I ask myself "what would it achieve?" and put my energies into something that I can actually change.

And they obviously approach their hardware with the same professionalism as their software development, so our expectations are low.

Or maybe pay more than $5/hr and get a competent programmer who has experience in this area.  Engage a consultant and make them responsible for ensuring it works.
With a good person on the job, a plan and some pre-testing, it should go reasonably smoothly.
