Oh no, I'm confusing that with what I used to log on to BBS's and play L.O.R.D. when I was 12. My sweet 386 with 2 megs of ram and 80 meg HD was boss.

I think you assume the servers are somewhat current/new.  They might be running 486DX/20s for all we know.

There's no doubt the hardware is not cutting edge.
But post MOTU it handled much bigger loads in terms of players.
Unless they went to virtualisation at some point in the interim to "save costs", the hardware doesn't explain it completely.  Server numbers are significantly lower than even last year, so volume of connections is unlikely to be the root cause.

I suspect most of the culprit is in the software.
The crap they've added without removing anything is likely causing conflicts and memory leaks.  They don!t know what the old code does, so they just bypass or tack onto it.  All those new features, calcs, etc take cycles and it all adds up.

How the hell do they find and fix it?  I'll leave that speculation up to the programmers because it sure seems like a bridge too far to me.

If they go into Maintenance mode anytime soon, we're going to be left with a bloody mess.  If they keep adding shit to it, then it will eventually not run at all.

Yeah, for me it had been steadily getting better and then suddenly went to hell again, so I suspect a single set of changes. I think it was right around the time when they started catching people even when they weren't obviously exploiting, so probably some of their logging or spy code.

If that's the case, it makes the enforcement effort twice as effective - once because it catches some, and the second because it drives others away  Cheesy

OK, I am waiting for a guildmate to log on so we can take a run, and he's having login problems. So I ran around the marketplace and wrote down character names, then looked them up in WHO.

Of the 50 I looked up, only 1 was anonymous, and it might be that he just logged off.

So 2% anonymous for the sample, I'd say it's safe to assume the  population is < 5% even if I had really bad luck sampling.

Seekers of Truth!

The Oracle comes to visit from his long quest in search of the mythical lucre to once again, bring you the Truth of all things.

Did you think his All Scrying Eye was not watching?  You are mistaken!  The Oracle maintains a watch on all things, even as he deals with the timber in his eye he got from helping someone with a splinter.

However, the Oracle did manage to to corrupt his data a while back, as mentioned while blending scrying sources.  Fortunately, it's a deterministic failure, which means it can be rolled back.  Unfortunately, the Oracle could teach a graduate class on how it's done and hasn't had that much time to roll it out.  And as the Oracle is already on the quest for the mystical lucre and to slay Mammon and take his place, well, not happening.

And yet here, when the Oracle checks in, he finds his people again crying for the Truth.  The Truth that is there (the truth is in there) but not currently available, and so like those wandering the desert, you have resorted to bad data and false gods.

Unlike the god of Israel, though, the Oracle applauds your self sufficiency and general get it done attitude. As such, the Oracle brings you DATA MANA!

While the data up to The Event is mangled and requires repair, the Oracle's All-Scrying eyes have continued all this time, with uncorrupted data.  So if the Traffic Report in question (hours/days/weeks/months/quaters/years) is less than the time since The Fail, actually, it's perfectly accurate.

However, normally the All Knowing Oracle cannot publish something that's less than perfectly accurate, right?

So .. hearing your pleas, the Oracle brings you .. the Oracle VAULT VERSION!  It's a combination of perfectly accurate, half-assed and incomplete.  Technically it should have soft-porn, bad language and violently opinionated content, but 3 out of 6 ain't bad.

You can access the Vault Special Report at:
http://www.ddoracle.com/vault/Traffic.html

This is a total, awful hack, but .. Vault.

Your Oracle will add a couple things worth mentioning:

1)  One day the Oracle went to check that traffic was all recording right and the traffic levels of ALL the servers were at Wayfinder's level.  Panic set in! A bug! The scrying eyes have a bug!

… it wasn't a bug.

2)  If you go to the main not-updated DDOracle.com, that data is a snapshot in time.  Comparing then and now is amusing.

3) Tomb of Horrors.  Remember to pick Tomb of Horrors!  It's a a D&D module about software development.

Thanks Oracle.

Ok, so the dip 29 days ago was the U25 virus infecting the servers.

What's the story with Sarlona?  Post U25, it completely tanks?
Did they change the default server from Sarlona to Orien last month?

Interesting that U25 barely made a blip on the logins.
Ghallanda and Thelanis are fighting for the 2nd lowest server pop now.

They're logins.

You're right about LOTRO.
There are a shitload of servers barely alive.

Why wouldn't they consolidate them and give us one?

Only about 10 of their servers have a decent population.

Oracle, what's with the LOTRO spike in Nov last year - one server almost hit a million logins that week (#44).
Did they have free give aways of real money or was that just the North Koreans penetrating WB servers?

More or less yes, same thing.  Though based on accounts instead of characters, based on the actual DDO login servers instead of reading the in-game social screen, and recorded hourly for the last 4+ years. SSDD

While the Oracle can't be "sure", at some point we data mongers go all science on the world and point out that 99.9% IS SURE.

What the Oracle is sure of is that there are anointed servers that have Turbine's blessing. That they change, and whoever is the default server gets a HUGE buff.

This was painfully obvious in the game traffic data ,but if not, 'pologies.

I'd be more interested in retention at this point.  Might be cool to match those data with the server switches...  we know there's a giant bump for any server that becomes the default, but how many of those people actually stick around?

I go back and forth on whether it's a good idea to have one server set for a while, or randomly alternate.  The former's nice because you get a big influx of noobs, so the LFMs at low levels light up, and there's an illusion of population.

It's always been an illusion. Look back to when it first happened. DEfault server or not, Ghallanda's population did not double overnight as it appeared to.

Granted the appearance has a self-fulfilling prophecy effect, when people transfer to or choose to start on the perceived most populous server.

SAGE      34              979102.21
At that point we had 4 to 6 active accounts

So i take it that members is the number of toons.

That's pathetic. Why would they bother keeping this server going. Just merge it with something else in the bottom one or two. When the total online population cant even support a raid there is something wrong. Or this this Turdbines way of getting more $$ through transfers.

It would be very unfair to say people are not doing raids on wayfinder. For example, I did heroic chrono for BB there only 1 month ago.

Sarlona lost the Default to Orien.
The Orienites all complained about Lag and got the Default moved again PDQ {18 days!} - This time to Cannith.
Cannith now has the Default and No more Lag than usual.

I am actually surprised at the surge in Orien's population this time round as last time it got the Default {from Cannith btw} it failed to catch Cannith at any point even though it held the Default that time for months!
After Orien lost the Default to Sarlona both Orien and Cannith fell away {Orien instantly back to 7th, Cannith slower but as you can see from the Oracle's latest graphs eventually to 7th after 6 months of Sarlona being the Default AND after Orien had got the Default back!

Note that according to the Monthly Graph ONLY FOUR of those Servers have populations anywhere near those of the main 7 on DDO!

Two are as strong as DDO's Default Server so I assume LotrO maintains two defaults?

Most of Lotro's Servers are deader than Wayfinder!

They could merge the five smallest servers there and still not have a population as large as the top 2!
And those top 2 aren't really anything to crow about either!
