It's also worth noting many of those LotRO servers were less populated than Wayfinder, so we have a long way to fall before any of the main DDO servers reach those levels of empty.

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

Did they have massive attrition?  or did they over anticipate the number of players they expected to have?

This prompted me to reinstall the game and actually go and find my level 37 whateveritwas.

Found this article too, which I think is quite a good read.

The problem is guilds and guild airships.  It's not as simple as "move your character".  They have people who spent real world $$ on ass sharts for their boat and amenities.  People worked for years to level their guild.  Bought guild renown elixirs.  Spent hours exploiting in the Orchard.  You can't just say "Oh well.  Join a guild over on the new server.  Or start over with your guild from level 1."  Sure there are ways to fix all of the above.  But it's not as easy as giving a transfer coupon out.  That's overly simplistic and naive.

According to their post they seem to have solved the issue... the Guild Leader coordinate things, and when he moves everything owned by the guild will move with him... then it's up to the rest of the guild to move too. ( at least that's how I parsed their kinship chapter )

The important thing to remember there is that DDO used to be LOTRO beta test, and that not it's the reverse... LoTRO beta test things for us.

Sounded very familiar too.

That was a good read.  Felt a bit like a football coach stirring life into a dead team, but good nonetheless.

No mention of Warhammer online.  A worthy death of an MMO if ever there was.

I don't know if optomistic estimates contributed as well, but attrition definitely played a part. They were much busier a few years ago.

I think it's just massive attrition.  Depending on the numbers you looked at they were a top 5 MMO for a while.  DDO never reached that height.  But now, I'd venture to guess their population is probably in the same ballpark but slightly ahead.  A LoTR license is probably more expensive than a D&D one, though.

What have WoW been doing to haemorrhage so many players so quickly?
Unlike Turdbine, I imagine there are some interesting strategy meetings occurring at WoW HQ....

60% of subscriptions were farmers.  Unfortunately their owners forgot to feed them.

One very big change recently, you can now buy game-time with gold:
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/18141101/introducing-the-wow-token-3-2-2015

So whilst the sub numbers have declined, sales have increased, as players purchase these 30 day game-time tokens to sell in game for gold.  A factor that doesn't seem to be noted in all the latest articles on the recent subscriber dip:

So in actuality, there are more than 5.5 million playing WoW currently.

EDIT:  I should add, the 1-20 portion of the game is also FTP.  Play here being essentially a trial, but still enough to get a foot in the door & keep it open via these new 30 time tokens...  with considerable grind, unaided.

several factors:
Reasonable alternative in FFXIV
Increased Expansion price but lowered the content offered
Released 2 major content patches with very little content outside of raids
removed flying - before being made to do a u-turn
Retelling same story via an alternative universe

Blizz blatantly treating Wow as a cash cow has really bitten them in the ass this expansion

WoW sucks.  Kids grow up and move on to real games.  All those 10-13 year olds that played WoW in 2010 are now 16-18 years old and realized it is lame.  What more you need to know?

if the majority of the $$ comes from subs then it's still a huge deal.

also sounds like WoW players are experiencing what DDO players did post MotU.  players get bored.  let sub lapse.  Blizzard releases shitty new content.  players re-sub to play shitty content.  get bored again because content is shitty.  let sub lapse again.

Clash of Clan, or Boom Beach... or Candy Crush... or any othr game

My nephew seems to be addicted to a shark game... and every time I see him he has to show me how his shark evolved.
( note : I see him every 3/4 months )... ok, he is only 11, but soon he will be of the target age for MMO
( and it's going to be tough... his parents are not net addicted like me )

It's amazing how much money some of these phone games make.  Clash of Clans or Game of War?  Fucking printing money.  From kids as young as 8 or 9 all the way up to adults.
