Now that they don't cause an XP penalty, I kind of like sending a Hireling ahead to a grisly death in a room full of mobs while I  fumble around in my inventory looking for that thing I just remembered I needed.

I wouldn't say hirelings are useless. There is that level 11 fighter with dimension door. He is my fave, and pretty much the only one I care about.

The Lvl 17 Wizard - Nedry Smallfoot - could do with an overhaul so why not change his bar from:
Recon {He's a Halfling}, Wall of Fire, Disco Ball, Meteor Swarm.
To:
DDoor, GH, Disco Ball, Chain Lightning?

Of course this would mean possibly changing up his gear from fire spec to Elec spec but I'm not sure caster hires even have the proper gear for their spells as is!

He could still be able to cast Recon {All Caster hires are supposed to have a repair spell available for WF even if it isn't on their bars} and could have Electric Loop and Lightning Bolt or Ball Lightning on his spam list.


As things stand however Nedry is in every way inferior to the Lvl 13 Wizard Hire - Barrage and the Lvl 15 FvS Hire - Larafay!




There's also two Lvl 16 Sorc Hires:
Mekwi has GH, Horrid Wilting, Disco Ball and Haste - Pretty good.
Zefyn has Sunburst, Firewall, Haste, Flesh to Stone - So saves you a couple of Haste Pots!

Change Zefyn's bar to DDoor, Firewall, Haste, Flesh to Stone.
Leave him Sunburst as a Spammable ability and done!

What is a hireling?

We get it, uber players like you don't need them.

But as Meursault said, they help ease the learning curve on the game for new players.  You alone aren't going to save this game.  We need to consider the general mass of players who are not l33t.

I run a pure Sorc and a pure Cleric which have no trapping skills and shitty reflex saves, so I admit to sometimes using a rogue hire in trap heavy quests. If that makes me a noob, so be it.  I accept your characterisation.

Sorry if it seems like a waste of dev time, but it need not be.

Bear in mind that some of us come from an RPG background, not FPS twitch gaming, so having a party is sometimes good fun.
I loved my Druid heroic life and a full party of summons, Panther, owlbear and charmed, misc item summons and hires.
Was just good fun until they completely borked the AI's and made them less than useless.
