Let me be clear - I am not endorsing any of the proposed changes.  I am referencing the apparent change in approach.

I agree with Sev's approach of putting these significant changes out there to be discussed.  It is the right thing to do to avoid the allegation of stealth nerfs.  The next step is mature debate which is taken onboard, cogitated and analysed and the best outcome for the game, in light of the broader canvas of recent and future changes, is determined.

The reality based on track record is these changes are already locked and loaded, the feedback and advice will be ignored and this whole exercise will have been a pointless pissing into the wind endeavour.
Even the language of the proposed changes is past tense and not "we're considering this".

I sincerely hope they do engage and explain.  People might not like change, but they can come to accept it if they understand it, the reasoning is sound and they have some sense of social maturity.

The big problem they have in DDO is these changes do not occur in a vacuum.  There is time, energy and resources put into builds that will be changed by this.  I'm talking rare items or T3 items built specifically for a build that is adversely affected (eg. Ranged Paladins).  People using non WAI features take the risks.  But using WAI things that are changed, especially after so long should not be punished for the devs inability to macromanage the game efficiently.

They need to give equal consideration to people adversely affected by this and how they can placate them.  +20 hearts is a start.
Gear - no idea how they handle that, so they won't.

Meursault raised a good point about casual gamers.  They don't have the luxury of burning thru another TR to "move on".  These sweeping changes can really affect that element of the playerbase.

I really think that Turdbine need to consider not only the mechanics of the changes, but how to mitigate the blowback.   Of course, based on past experience, they won't.

Who said Sev had been replaced??
He sure isn't acting like someone "sulking in his office playing NWO"?
Was that another Vault gambit?

I was one.

This balance pass is born of two things. first off, the fact that they can hang the blowback on Sev as he is already on his way out the door, he has enthusiastically embraced this role, he sees it as a way to leave his mark on the game that he couldn't figure out much less "fix".  Second, the scope and scale of the balance pass is a direct reflection of the animosity and spite Sev has developed for the game and players that didn't appreciate his "genius".

Look very closely at the language he uses, and the pace he sets, also don't miss his lead off complaint about people making fun of his term "over performing", yes he actually complains about it. Quite simply Sev is out to settle scores here before leaves.

He has no input or involvement with day to day operations any more, and has been merely holding the fort for appearance sake for WB. Like any company they decided to use his departure to clean up some small problems and in typical Sev fashion he has let his wounded pride amplify the outcome. No one knew that he was going to drop the whole package today, or even that he had added so many items to the list. Now it's very easy to see that he is trying to make significant changes to his ideas and developments that didn't work before his replacement audits the game and starts that process of correction and rollback.

Try to understand that by doing this kind of really large scale deep revision Sev is insuring that the changes he makes will be the left untouched for at least 18-24 months because in the future the team will have to examine the on-going effects of the changes before being able to apply for the resource direction orders to change such new deployments.

Good news, Sev is almost gone. Sad news, he is going to warp the game out of spite on his way out the door.

So, nope no gambit vault or otherwise, just the sad outcome of a man in over his head bringing the game down to his level.

Thanks Tranquil.
Can't he just leave already?  Seems like it is taking forever.    Undecided

Somebody in WB or another corporate, just employ him and sit him in an office doing something appropriate for his skill level, like sorting paper clips - just get him away from DDO pls!

I should probably give you this warning Drop, it could drag out til the first weeks of December, that's rather unlikely but there is still a small chance it could happen that way now that they are into the quarter and still rearranging management assignments.

Sorry to be bearer of so much bad news.

This is written like the author is there in the office or is getting info from someone who is.  Not that I buy it for a minute; Sev has been on the block for well over a month - closer to two - I don't recall any corp that keeps a guy hanging from the noose that long.

Wow, that is at once so pathetic and so plausible. Shove it so far up our asses even a competent surgeon would take many hours of surgery to extract it.

So any word what project his "genius" will next grace? Does WB know what a bitter, spiteful, incompetent poser they have? It sounds like they are at least moderately involved, and given Turdbin's track record that sounds like a good thing.

I'd love to see somebody with successful reorg experience clean house and turn Turbine around.

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

Based on past performance - absolutely.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not being naive, just saying that the theory behind this approach is what I would advocate as best practice if it were done appropriately.
As always, Turdbine manages to bastardize and corrupt everything.

As Tranquil has indicated, this is all done with an agenda that does not actually involve benefiting the customers at all.

Le sigh.

Hard to believe so called professionals can be so petty.  I guess it is tough to look in a mirror and say, "I didn't do a good job on this".

On what basis do you make your statements/assertions Techno?

I have seen people that are intentionally sidelined, so they get pissed off and leave and you don't need to pay them a severance package.
Sev's been there awhile - maybe the cost of having him around is less than paying his severance package?

It is an unethical and ill-advised strategy as you have a disgruntled employee lingering around poisoning the water.

TMZ will be right back after this with breaking news about an argument between two Kardashians over...nothing.

On the changes, I agree with Dropbear about how things should be handled for changes of this magnitude.  The reality is, however, that Turbine is not that kind of development company and the player base is not that kind of end user/customer.  What you describe works much better in professional environments.  Not the gaming industry.  Wish it were otherwise.

Perhaps I'm misremembering, but I thought Tranquil said he was being moved elsewhere within WB, not fired, so "keeping him in the noose while alternatives are arranged" is perfectly normal. For a firing, no, but for an internal move, yes.

And if it's billed right, it could even have a positive effect on morale - "You did well and we're rewarding you with a great opportunity" could inspire others to work hard for a similar parachute out of Turdbin.

If you're looking for consensus, then I agree.  Trying to get your gaming customers to make decisions for you could be tricky unless you constrain the decision options.

In the devs position, the way I would approach it is:
The game is too complex for one person to know everything, especially if I am working full time and only able to play it casually.
So why not put controversial ideas out there, and seek feedback.  By getting pros and cons, you can form a more comprehensive view and make better weighted decisions.  There are players who have more time, more aptitude, more passion than you have - to think otherwise is arrogance.

Sure you have to filter the noise and you need to encourage constructive feedback.  Noise gets deleted or ignored and eventually most will pick up on this and only comment if they have something constructive to say.  (Exception for Uska who has some drivel to say about everything).

Ultimately the decisions reside with the devs and this should always be the case and be made clear.  Whether you explain your decisions is up for debate, as sometimes the decisions will be made for reasons that would displease players (eg. Increase store sales) and I'd rather say nothing than try to bullshit my customers.

Just because the customers are gamers, does not negate their value in providing feedback.  It just means you need to be cognisant of that and manage the debate accordingly.

That's my view anyway.

I think what bothers me the most about the list is I love my pure Pally twf. I had to sacrifice quite a bit for the feats to have decent usage.. and now my Holy Sword won't work on the 2nd blade.. AND I lose my Melee Power for the ranks.. ?

I'm calling bawlz Sad

I don't think naming names would be a good thing for me to do, but I'd pretty much add anyone who's a know-it-all dick on the list. Even if they are sometimes intelligent with their opinions, the way they state them in long, "i'm a lawyer at trial"-type posts makes me want to punch them in the face. They act like whiney babies with god complexes and then freak out if someone so much as breathes criticism in their direction.
