it is possible that they changes they made to the OS/Servers/Database fixed it, which wouldn't necessarily be "fixing code"

Yeah ... but isn't that even more far-fetched? That they can change OS, Servers, or Database, without bricking--Or wait, are you saying the company they contract with to host the virtual servers made some changes? Cuz that, I might believe.

One of the posts by Zyrca mentioned the exact mechanism that was causing it - cached information about spells/clickies that was going out of cache and had to be reloaded from the DAT file.

My research through several Process Monitor traces showed this, but wasn't showing *why* it was leaving cache.  The expalnation of rearchitecting the object model resulting in a larger object (thus being more likely flushed from cache) is certainly reasonable.

The crappy thing to this is this rearchitecting should have been spotted as an issue in perf testing by *any* reasonably competent software dev shop. 

SSG is just showing its lack of talent and worse, lack of concern for customer experience.

And regardless of their changes, it was still a laggy shitshow on Ghallanda this weekend.  Not the exact same hitching, but still laggy as hell in general.

It makes one wonder how many other code problems similar to this have existed for a long time and simply flown under the radar because on their own, they weren't causing enough of a problem to warrant any of the devs to look into it properly like they finally had to for the problem referenced in the OP.

With all the janky bugs and issues the game currently has around auras, spell effects, scripted spawns, etc., I'd be willing to be good money there are quite a few of these type problems squirming around in that mound of spaghetti code.
