Wiki no longer seeing updates?

I swung by the DDO wiki to check the date for the anniversary(I had forgotten when it was), and discovered that the Special Event History page hasn't have an anniversary event updated since 2015. Is the wiki just no longer getting the proper love it needs?

The one guy doing it was jobless and about to be homeless from being a DDO addict.

It's not like the devs want to pay anyone anything they can get for free.

Well yeah, many game wikis are volunteer-run and maintained. I take it the guy running it is also so toxic he can't get anyone to help him?

Add to that the fact that he drove away most of the people that were willing to update the wiki... there's the ddocompendium now, it's slowly filling up, it's still not up to the wiki level of content.

there is a ddowiki discord channel. If you post your observations there some of the last crusaders will try to edit what's missing.

Does he just delete/revert edits?

Even if he owns the domain, seems like if enough people get on there and start adding updates while ignoring him, he'll be left with the choice to either acquiesces or shut everyone else out.

Not just edits, entire interfaces.  Someone had made a custom dashboard or splash page or something along those a while back that had some users and he fucked it to the point of uselessness for reasons entirely his own.

When I was attempting to edit there at the time, there was a group of about 4 or 5 people that "maintained" the wiki. So yeah, it was a couple of years ago.

When I did my edits, I included an explanation on why I added something, usually a rare mob with an XP objective that wasn't already included. Every edit I made was reverted by one of the main editors without an explanation why it was reverted.

So, yeah, it was time-consuming trying to prevent your edits from disappearing by the main editors. It wasn't even even Anons that were deleting stuff from the wiki, but the main editors.

But the blame was always on the Anons ruining the wiki. Eventually, blame for the vandalism by Anons lead to a security code or captcha being added to the wiki when you logged in. It's also telling that when that security code/captcha was added, the wiki almost completely stopped updating since causal editors just stopped updating.

I feel like a lot of DDO's community would be ripe for picking on at Kiwi Farms. From what I'm reading here, it sounds like the admins there actively are doing everything they can to make DDOwiki less effective for everyone.

DDOwiki has dozens of updates every day. Hundreds on busy days.

One admin is indeed a tremendous PITA to deal with. Hint: Avoid notice. Or be subservient enough.

One change in the recent years is that wiki is moving away from manually updated lists of stuff (monsters, loot, quests...) to automatically generated lists of stuff. While manually updated lists are easier to edit for new editors, they are harder to maintain and error prone. So there's that. Automatic generation does bring a certain additional complexity and requires stricter adherence to standards and syntactic precision.

Who cares about anniversaries. Stuff gets obsolete fast. If you want to make anniversaries your pet project, go ahead. It is quite possible that the missing anniversaries are mentioned somewhere on the wiki, just not on that particular page. Just needs some linking and/or copypasting.

The high level question would be whether it makes sense for a purely volunteer wiki to be:

A)  Easily maintained by a few dedicated expert editors who know the templates and methods being used.

or

B) Easily maintained by a large pool of casual editors.  Who only need to know how to use a word processor and some basic markups.

A case could be made for either scenario.   The right answer, to me, would depend on how stable you expect your few dedicated expert editors to be.   If they build a complex wiki automation system that creates a barrier to entry for other editors then they need to understand that, in making that decision, they are making a commitment.   They should stay active and keep it updated and if they want to leave, stay long enough to locate and educate a replacement.   It almost becomes an unpaid part time job.   If you don't want to sign up for that, then KISS method works best.

@crunch, thanks for stopping by dude. We all super appreciate the work ya'll do.

B?, since the system is more stable. If you lose key personnel in organization A, it causes more harm than a proportional loss from system B... right?

My 2 cents is B is much better for a community effort. Making sure every single monster stat is accurate is less important than basic gameplay information, which has to be updates with every release anyway.

I'm willing to bet a number of current crew of wiki editors are those that believe such things.

If you do some digging, you can still find it in the history. There's apparently also a mobo thread.

In my opinion, the templates shouldn't be an issue from an editor's perspective. An editor should be able to copy something else that already uses the template and edit the new thing in. An issue with using auto-generated tables is that the server the wiki is hosted on can't seem to handle it. It often goes down for several minutes at a time. What good is a wiki when the end user can't access the information on it?

This is an example of why an auto-generated list is better, even if it includes too much. That list includes Spinal Tap, but not Assassin's Kiss, Sapphire Sting, Elemental Bloom, or Cranium Cracker. It stayed there without those items for about 4 years.

LOL, so true!

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.
