Opinions on Stick builds for returning players

Greetings, I am a returning player since 2006 so i am deep into the game at least til last year from when i made a 1 year break. Now that i am back i am trying to optimize and level a very fun toon idea that is a qstaff build. I have read many ideas here in the forums but since most posts are a bit obsolete i would like your help/opinion/expertise in building so as to conclude at something.

Main targets is to be able to
1) level normally during heroics (thas means traps and self healing or dmg avoidance)
2) be able to solo everthing until r1 or r2
3) be a good dps dealer in endgame
4) be able to not only stand between party members but shine as well

That idea i tried to make it happen by using 13 rogue / 6 monk /1 wiz for metamagic quicken spell and shield for mm. Unfortunately the changes in henshin mystic were a great nerf to the dmg of this split and i am wondering now if other splits or even going pure will be better. Can you propose a split? or go pure?

I think there are many advantages in the above mentioned split since with an epic tr you can modify it to become a twf wraps or dagger build, or a shuri build which i think can be done nicely with a pure as well.

Among all these options can you help me and put them in line considering dps, survivability, trapping, healing, dmg mitigation?

Thanks for your help and attention.

I suggest pure Rogue 20 that's a Thief Acrobat.

The extra attack speed and extra sneak attack damage makes for a very fun-to-play toon.

Is the acrobat capstone too good to trade off with a splash of 2 levels?

18/2 fighter/rouge, 18/2 rogue/fighter or pure 20 rogue imo.

For 18/2 fighter, you'd want to go Str based with Power Attack and medium or heavy armor for max prr/mrr and the extra bonuses to Stalwart Defense stance.

For 18/2 rogue and pure rogue, go Dex based with Precision and Light armor for evasion and max dodge and dodge cap.

Henshin Monk used to be my choice for Q-Staff user. Cauldron of Flame was decent but the amount of Melee Power the cores gave was outstanding.

Since they nuked (not nerfed) the MP available in the cores, Henshin just wasn't worth it.

Digimonk's suggestions for 18Rog/2Ftr or Pure Rogue, DEX-based, etc. are WAY better paths to tread.

And yes, the TA capstone, imho, is worth taking but two fighter feats are also pretty tempting.

18/2 fighter/rogue gives you better BAB and 9 of the Fighter Bonus feats.

That works out to an extra 10 MP and +2 dmg via the weapon focus and specialization plus an extra 30 PRR if you go with heavy armor feats.  Or swap the heavy armor feats for the tactics and get a bunch of extra tactics DC for no-fail Dire Charge goodness.

I'm pretty sure the rogue version is more DPS, but the fighter version has better defenses while still doing decent DPS.

Its a trap, dont go pure rog :-D Really, very bad choice for ungeared few lifer: no melee power, no sustain but scrolls ans decent dodge, no cc till 29 (with 2 broken actives in tree) and dex build which will fail lay waste.
Just my own opinion: the best way is 8 rog TA 12 monk henshin, t5 henshin.
Pros: better mp, to hit, damage, better dodge, ac, saves, self sustain (either dark or light monk path)
Cons: worse mrr, need int tomes if you want to do traps, need to slot wis item too, lower SA damage

Think build is pretty obvious: thwf x3, crits: blungeon, dodge, mobility, spring attack, power attack, cleave, gr cleave, grand master if forms (at 18 or on epics if not human or taken completionist feat)
Start as rogue, cariful with stats, you'll need total 17 str for greater thwf and 13 just for power attack yet its possible to start with 10 str. Dex, con, wis are main stats, int secondary for traps (may use swap items), cha and str no needed.

Overall pretty fun to play both heroics and epics, possible to r1-3 solo on first life toons if geared (good saves and dps, good sustain allows to survive nukes and kill fast enough), yet endgame mid to high reaper it'll become dodge-or-die with decent dps output. Yet its current trouble of any thw builds.

Why being a pure rogue is a trap?

It's not a trap per se.  It's just that a pure rogue Thief Acrobat has lower overall defenses than ones with Kensai splashes.

Especially if you're planning on running mid to high skull reaper in epics, you will want all the defense you can pile onto the toon.  Doubly so on toon that doesn't have the defensive oriented epic PLs or a bunch of Reaper points.

ok i see, but how with just 2 levels of fighter you get more defences? and lets say what are the defences you need so you wont be retarded dps wise in reapers?

Well, an 18/2 rogue/fighter would really just for tier 2 of kensai and the bonus fighter feats.  Defensively, it wouldn't be much better than a pure rogue.  If you prefer the rogue icon but want the defenses, you have to take at least 3 fighter for Stalwart Defense stance.  At that point,  you might as well do 12/8 or 14/6 rogue/fighter for more bonus feats.

18/2 fighter/rogue though would have a lot of extra defenses.  You'd mainly be a Kensai with the quarterstaff attack speed from T2 Thief Acrobat and some extra SA.

You can run a stick build a lot of ways depending on your mood and preferences. I have done Strength, Dex, Int and Cha heavy builds over the years and find most often I do Strength or Int depending on how much Rogue I am taking that life. Currently my Stick toon is finishing the last 4 or 5 Heroic lives of his Completionist (he's not my main but I do love having a stick build to play) Most often I am in an 8x 6 ftr 6 rog build of late and just because it's that split set don't think it weak or incapable. I am at cap perfectly willing to take what the last life was into R1 Baba  and generally any R3-4 content with a group (I tend to solo and do speed runs do it doesn't do a ton of reaper each life and I think I have just 10 or 12 rp on it right now but with good gear it makes a decent raid toon.

Last life was handy for the Rage of Madness chain as a Sorc since I could take Glitterdust for the eyes in that chain.

If you go Strength build do Heavy Armor and cleaves with Opportunity Strike for Kensai that I tend to use for the T5 with enough in TA to get the stick speed and other goodies.

As far as gear.... in heroics I do a cc/slavers set at 8. A mostly CC set at 11 or 14 depending on mood and will just do that to cap other than changing weapons.

Low level I have an ML1 Screaming of Bleed Stick, at 4 the new stick from Cove, then Souleater at 7 as well as Elemental Bloom from Temple. At 12 a few GS sticks and 13 Light Unending from the Shav chain is first rate. I don't even usually pull out my Dreamspitter anymore just use those until 20 and then decide to go into Epics or TR again.

Heroics Gear isn't too hard. The Epic stuff at cap is mostly Ravenloft stuff. The Avengers set and Mist set any usually 1 or two CC items to make up for missing bits. Fairly standard stuff really.

Right now i am level 26 and 13 rogue / 6 monk / 1 wiz. Went 13 rogue for 2 rogue feats opportunist and defensice roll or improved evasion (will decide which one best fits), more sneak attack and got tier 5 TA tree

6 monk were for the MP before the nuke but now it gives only 9 from the 3 core and i think some more in the hensin tree (10 if i am right), some ac, feats, adept of forms and some more defences than more levels of rogue.

1 wiz is for the metamagic quicken for cocoon, shield spell for mm and some sp.

Heroics is smooth i know and i have levelled easily but for epics after level 25 things are vague concerning the defences it can reach and the optimal setup as well

If you're having problems surviving then go with Digi's 18 fighter split. Or 12/6cleric/2 for animal domain's 160 hps and divine might on a strength based build.

If you want to be centered then 12f/6m/2ro. Probably the highest focused single target dps version.

If you want the most trash dps then go pure 20 rogue. The capstone is amazing because it is essentially Dance of Death and Balanced Attacks. For me, that ability beats out anything other splits can get because trash is the most dangerous threat and most common threat in every quest, with the exceptions of some raids. Get into the habit of tumbling into mobs, dire charge, and just pivot around while killing everything around you.

Captsone:
Quote:
Followthrough: You gain +2 Strength and Dexterity, +1 to hit and +2 damage with quarterstaves, +5% attack speed with quarterstaves, +2 critical hit damage with all weapons, +2 Balance, Jump, and Tumble, +2 Sneak Attack dice and +2 to hit when performing Sneak Attacks.
After tumbling, for 6 seconds your basic attacks with two handed weapons strike two targets per swing instead of one and gain On Vorpal: Your target is knocked down.

You'll want to use the Staff of Shadows or the Bone Crusher. Staff of Shadows has the highest dps, but Bone Crusher should be right behind it.

Get the Bloodrage Chrism, an amazing item, if youre doing the kensei or pure rogue ( cant use this item on monk splashes ).

Thanks. Probably will drop all of power attack, cleave and g cleave for precision / mobility/ spring attack. Dosge is already used in the build..
