I'm sure it will have some impact, like Neverwinter did.

Yeah, I'm not worried, I'll just take my laptop down to Borders for free wifi and play SSG's version.

2020 is going to be an interesting year for SSG, between Amazon's LotR MMO and Tuque's D&D multiplayer online RPG (https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/12/13/dark-alliance-revealed-as-new-action-rpg...) they might feel a bit of a squeeze.

And they've earned it, of course, with their "you're having fun wrong, we know best" attitude.

But it's great either way - if the new games are good enough to replace DDO & LotRO then we have great new games, and if not we at least have some competition to shake up their complacency. And it needs shaking.

Turdbin, keep changing the DDO rules, because McDonalds sold over 200 billion hamburgers by changing the recipe for their Special Sauce every couple of months to keep interest up.

BG3 is probably a bigger threat, just by drawing eyeballs for a while.   Even that isn't an MMO, though.

Don't get me wrong.  I'll check it out.   But after a few play thrus I doubt it has much legs.

(Also what's with that "running into the camera" view?)

Lol. Youtube comments are gold.

Not sure I would bother with the Torque game too much as I really don't like fixed character RPGs all that much myself nor online only games usually but time will tell.

The thing about MMOs is that SSG seems to just want to keep milking what whales they have and are satisfied with their existing player base. They put zero efforts into getting any new players and in fact their hyper cash grabbishness which infects the UI for a new player has to turn off so many people.

I mean lets face it if you started to play today you could play 4 races with the rest paywalled. There are 4 expansions you have to buy.... plus all the adventure packs or pay for VIP which for a new player isn't a terrible idea but why on earth would someone who never has played before and who is damn likely to fall into the create a toon that should work in PnP and doesn't because.... character creation traps. These people just run into a fail. Hell I started playing 9 years ago and it took me 7 months to learn that wiki existed and that first toon.... god did it suck but I got it to 20 and it took me a year. The sole reason I kept playing was I was duoing with a guy I went to High School with and slogged our way through. That first life took us nearly a year with out schedules and slowly going through each corner of every dungeon nook and cranny. Hell hating running into "zerging" was a pet peeve for that time I thoroughly enjoyed the game so much in those days.

It's funny if I go to start playing say SWTOR they have that set up so if I want to run content older than the current expansion it's legitimately part of their free to play setup before you deal with the whole cash shop thing.

Between a new AAA MMO coming and their idiotic lack of basic marketting will SSG survive??? Fuck if I know but good god at least they figured out how to add a horse that was a controllable...

Cosmetics are a big deal of their sales, as well as convenience/pay-to-bypass type stuff like Otto's boxes.

I don't recall whether or not housing has store tie ins. Back when I used to play several years ago it didn't. But who knows now.

The thing is, it doesn't have to have legs to deal a serious blow to SSG, they clearly aren't "plan for the future" types so I sincerely doubt they have significant reserves. Even a mere 3 month hit to income could "force" them to make some really bad monetization choices that trigger another round of player attrition. They wouldn't even understand what was happening.

Your point about not being an MMO is interesting, in this day and age, how important is MMO vs online coop? I'm not sure how localized a phenomenon it is, but nobody I play with regularly plays just one game anymore. Connecting outside of a game and hopping into an online coop isn't noticeably more difficult than hooking up in an MMO now. In fact, for most of my play, online coop is better because I don't get lag from some rando spamming auras in another quest.

I agree that 10 years ago an MMO would have a strong competitive advantage, but today an online RPG seems to be on nearly equal footing.

^This. Our IRL gaming group brought in 2 new players, and I introduced them to GW2 and DDO. They spent $19.95 each for *all* GW2 expansions, looked at DDO and said "uh, how much? For this? No thanks" and that was it. So GW2 "only" got $20, but DDO got nothing.

The Dark Alliance games have always been a hack and slash affair. Not a true RPG, let alone MMORPG.

So DDO is an MMORPG because you can join a group to solve tile puzzles?
It looks like hack and slash to me.
Four melee two cater two ranged, twelve feet, four melee two Caster two ranged, corner, four melee two Caster two ranged...

Probably depends on your definition of Online Coop vs. MMO.   Online Coop RPG to me is something more like multiplayer single Campaign RPG.

Hack n Slash isn't the issue.  The issue is everything else.  The game shown above is basically Halo with swords and hammers and axes and bows.   You can play as Drizzt or Bruenor instead of Master Chief or the Arbiter, etc.   That's an FPS in a fantasy setting.

Holy fuck, I thought you were joking and wondered what obscene .GIF that link would lead to.

So I guess I was wrong, they do have some ability to plan ahead and they're getting a start on the bad monetization before they lose potential customers  Undecided

horrible deal for 50k gem xp. They should have bundled it with christmas themed cosmetics. Not just a green and red aura for weapons.

My understanding is that it's ten (10) 5,000 Sentience XP gems.

Less chance of wasting Sentience XP.
