Basically in this case the publisher is the effective owner, as in being the effective ultimate decision maker - see EA and also Activision Blizzard as examples of how this relationship develops in practise over time. Publisher is basically the games industry version of Investor
If you look sat Daybreaks games, its clear they keep zombie games limping along to extract money out of them. Nothing here is setting the world on fire
EverQuest,
EverQuest II,
The Matrix Online,
PlanetSide,
Star Wars Galaxies,
Clone Wars Adventures,
Free Realms,
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes,
DC Universe Online,
PlanetSide 2,
H1Z1: Just Survive,
H1Z1: King of the Kill
Daybroke took over Sony Online Entertainment, half of these games were already dead/defunct by the time they took over.
Of the remaining ones they've closed half of them. And they canceled practically every project/sequel that Sony had in development with the smaller studios included in the deal.
So saying they keep life support models open to milk money isn't really that true.
Hell; EQ1-2 and DCUO are the only games left on that list still alive. Planetside 2 is on true life support.
