Quote:
We have seen our communities come together in recent months as we unlocked quest, raid, and adventure area content to all players, and we are excited to make an announcement today that you'll want to read.

We would like to thank you for supporting us! To start, players can continue to enjoy all of our quests, raids, and expansion content for free through August 31st, 2020. We would also like to provide a way for you to move forward with your gaming when our event eventually comes to an end, so in the coming days we will be providing a Coupon Code that will let you acquire all currently-available adventure packs permanently on your account(s)! However, you will need to act quickly, as this Coupon Code is available to redeem through August 31st, 2020.

Additionally, we will be conducting a sale on two of our expansions in the DDO Store! When the sale is active, players will be able to pick up the quests included in Menace of the Underdark and The Shadowfell Conspiracy for 99 DDO Points. Stay tuned for exact timing on the sale.

We are also announcing an update to our VIP program! VIPs will be getting a permanent +1% XP boost for every member in their party other than themselves and hirelings, up to a maximum of 5%. This boost stacks with other bonuses, and works the same as our long-running weekend Buddy Boost bonuses.

VIPs do not need to do anything to get this update, as your VIP account(s) will automatically receive this benefit starting in a game update in the near future.

Please continue to stay safe, and we are happy to have you here.

Sincerely,

The teams at Standing Stone Games

I don't understand the motivation for this. Someone give me speculation plox.

If boxes are... "available", wouldn't content be the thing they keep selling? Something smells funny to me.

Translation: because of the extreme duping of ottos boxes, we're going to give all the old, honest players all the shit they've already paid us for ages ago.  For free!

It's not a bad move.  Half-assed and pointless to the whales, but good for newer players and gives the appearance of effort to the forum paladins.

Turbine policy - glitches and poor coding resulting in interference of your game play or enjoyment will be ignored.  Glitches or poor coding on the developers side that at all benefit your game play or enjoyment will result in your character being banned and/or items from your inventory deleted.  Please report all bugs via our bug report...when it works.

I hope it is a change in business model but it looks more like a 1 time giveaway.

Hmm..

But, you can't dupe content. (yet). You think this is just to pacify the people on the outside of the dupes? I dunno about that. I still don't see the financial move for SSG on this yet. I mean, I guess it could be "don't quit--here's some shiny turds!" to keep people on. But, that feels short-sighted. On the other hand, who is buying MOTU who doesn't have it yet? I dunno. But some of the newer stuff (RL and Sharn) still seem sellable.

Maybe packs just don't make up much of their revenue stream anyway. They're too busy selling +5s to lazy TRs like Gunga.  Grin

A little bit this. A committed premium player is going to buy 3 packs a year...for 1500-2000 points?

But I think mostly this. There's been a big uptick in new players since the lockdowns started. And there's going to be a mass exodus the day that those players log on and see that all of a sudden they can't access half(?) the content in the game without plunking down some cash.

I think they have seen a bunch of players back during lock down and seen the revenue they gain from store consumables like heal pots, mana pots, xp pots, Bells, Shards, Rez cakes, hearts etc when players can Run all content and stay engaged.   Then there are the cosmetics and bags and tomes and such.

The key isn’t selling content.  Content is a one time purchase.   That has diminishing returns.   The win for them is selling convenience and consumables and quality of life.   (Sure power/p2win too but hopefully less of that.   I can dream. )

and multiply all that by... how many total lives are there now?
Considering it takes some players months or years to get all those lives, if hooked to the game, that'll be a long time extra revenue for SSG from them.

I hope they make this permanent.
A giant roadblock to new players is the content purchases.

I couldn't agree more. It's wonderful to be able to bring new players along with you into all the content and give them an Idea of just how big and varied the quests are. That really hooks new players.

The biggest paywall is Epic Destinies. Pay up or be worthless 20-30.

This fellow Astorpotamus, is a short-sighted buffoon the kind of sad person that rates what they get on what other people don't get. This type of fool will only be happy if the velvet rope mentality takes over.

I think 150 is/was 3 of each? 407 is dumb.

I am glad to see them extend the free content bit. I recently got around to making a spare account just to have as a Necro 1/2 openner for faster racial farming and really had forgotten just how much of the game is behind that paywall. Character creation is so laid over with tags to the store its not even funny.

I had twinges and in truth if I saw it as a new player I really doubt I would bother with this game. That blatant in your face pattern just isn't right for me.

At any rate it's a surprising yet quite welcome development.

So, uh, basically all content will be purchasable by a single coupon? What does all this wierd SSG monologue mean?

Vaultaccount wrote on Aug 29th, 2016 at 7:06pm:
The most broken epic PL in the game is the ridiculous AC buff from martial PLs. But when you include all the inherent benefits from reincarnation, the thing is above the roof. The benefit from TR was supposed to be minimal, but now it is game breaking. start a new character and you will feel, you will get raped in heroics.

Personally I think lower heroics on new characters are harder than Legendary Elite content on a character with good gear and has all destinies farmed.

Wow.

Have you EVER gone to Law School Feyn? Have you EVER been asked by a United States Senator who is now the Vice President of the United States to write a paper just for him on a particular topic of Constitutional Law for his use as a Senator? Have you ever been asked to help a very notable Harvard PhD turned Constitutional scholar with his very-well received book on Legal Philosophy and Constitutional Revolutions? Have you ever been offered a job as a Deputy Attorney General BEFORE you even graduated Law School?

No? Then STFU you fucking amateur.

A step in the right direction, but I hope they find a way to make this permanent.

The current business model is one of the big things severely holding this game back, DDO will never be good with this shit 2006 freemium strategy.
