I've been thinking about this Old Gamer thing and I've come to the conclusion that aside from the game dynamics been driven by dice rolls, so too is the network connection.  Every now and again the server rolls a 1,000,000 on a d1000000 and starts dropping packets for a random amount of time.

This feature was left behind in the engine source code by a disgruntled employee but because the current developers only know VBA, it remains hidden.
